Delta rice farmers will have two opportunities to see the latest, top-performing Clearfield® and Provisia® varieties from Horizon Ag at separate field days in Arkansas in August.
The first Horizon Ag Arkansas Field Day will be held on August 4 in Stuttgart at the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Rice Research and Extension Center. The second Horizon Ag Arkansas Field Day is scheduled for August 12 in Jonesboro at Coleman Farms, located off County Road 448. Both begin at 5 p.m. and include guest speakers and dinner.
“Having two field days in different locations this year should enable farmers to pick the one that works best or is more convenient for them,” says Dr. Tim Walker, Horizon Ag general manager. “We’re very excited that we get to see our customers and business partners across the region in person this summer after COVID-19 led to the cancellation of last year’s events. We have some great things to show and talk about, like Clearfield variety CLL16, which was first available for commercial planting this year, and new Provisia variety PVL03.”
A long grain Clearfield® rice variety developed by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, CLL16, has shown excellent rough rice yields, averaging higher than Diamond in university tests. Its performance consistency, high milling quality and industry-leading blast resistance made CLL16 the complete package for many rice farmers as they selected seed for 2021.
PVL03, the newest variety for the Provisia Rice System, was only available for seed production in 2021 but should be in better supply for planting next season. PVL03 is a long-grain rice with very good yield potential, milling and grain appearance, along with blast resistance. The Provisia Rice System, with Provisia herbicide, is recognized as one of the most effective weed management tools available for Southern rice today.
Attendees also will learn more about a new contest that celebrates growers who achieve both great yields and great quality during the 2021 season. The ClearPro Rice Challenge by BASF is open to Clearfield and Provisia rice growers in the Southern rice producing region, with prizes awarded to top-scoring, qualifying participants.
