BASF’s new state-of-the art production facility for vegetable seeds in Ethiopia offers ideal year-round production conditions for sweet pepper, tomato and cucumber to serve customers worldwide.
The first seeds produced at BASF’s new state-of-the-art production facility in Ethiopia enter the global vegetable seed market. Located in the country’s Amhara region, the facility offers ideal year-round production conditions for sweet pepper, tomato and cucumber. It is BASF’s first high-tech greenhouse complex in Africa.
“We invested around €8 million into this new facility. It will provide us with extra supply reliability and flexibility to serve our customers worldwide,” said Vicente Navarro, Senior Vice President of BASF’s vegetable seeds business. “Sustainable food production is very important to us and we want to do our part. That is why we are very proud of this new facility: It makes us a frontrunner in terms of establishing the first sustainable high-tech seed production site in Ethiopia with fully automated processes for climate control including humidity, heating and irrigation.”
The premises cover a surface of 15 hectares: two hectares are occupied by
state-of the-art greenhouses while the rest is used for open field seed production facilities and infrastructure. Currently, around 70 permanent employees are working at the new site. In addition, BASF also provides employment to more than 100 seasonal workers. Most of the employees were recruited from the surrounding areas and trained in-house.
The sustainable high-tech seed production facility is located in the country’s Amhara region. All processes for climate control are fully automated including humidity, heating and irrigation. To reduce the site’s carbon footprint, mainly renewable energy sources are used to generate electricity.
High sustainability standards and commitment to social responsibility
The site fulfills BASF health, safety and environmental standards and goes beyond Ethiopia’s common sustainability requirements. To reduce its carbon footprint, mainly renewable energy sources are used to generate electricity. The greenhouses are heated with solar panels. Furthermore, the facility has its own wastewater treatment plant and all the waste it produces can be recycled on site.
In addition, BASF is engaged in numerous social responsibility initiatives in the vicinity of the site. “I am very proud to see that apart from delivering seeds to Ethiopian smallholder farmers, we are also actively involved in projects for reforestation and soil erosion control in the area,” stressed Ben Depraetere, Managing Director Nunhems Ethiopia PLC and Country Head of BASF’s vegetable seeds business in Ethiopia. “We want the local community to benefit. That is why, for example, we also supply the community around our site with safe drinking water, have invested in building new road infrastructure and established a fund to create job projects for unemployed young people from the surrounding area.”

Das erste Gemüsesaatgut, das in der neuen, hochmodernen Produktionsanlage von BASF in Äthiopien gezüchtet wurde, kommt weltweit auf den Markt. Die in der Region Amhara gelegene Anlage bietet ideale Bedingungen für die ganzjährige Produktion von Paprika, Tomaten und Gurken. Es ist der erste Hightech-Gewächshauskomplex von BASF in Afrika.
„Wir haben rund 8 Millionen € in die neue Anlage investiert. Sie wird uns zusätzliche Versorgungssicherheit und Flexibilität bieten, um unsere Kunden weltweit zu bedienen“, sagt Vicente Navarro, Leiter des Gemüsesaatgutgeschäfts von BASF. „Die nachhaltige Produktion von Lebensmitteln ist uns sehr wichtig und wir wollen unseren Beitrag dazu leisten. Deshalb sind wir sehr stolz auf diese neue Anlage. Es ist der erste nachhaltige, hochmoderne Standort für Saatgutproduktion in Äthiopien mit vollautomatischen Prozessen zur Klimakontrolle, einschließlich Feuchtigkeit, Heizung und Bewässerung. Damit sind wir Vorreiter.“
Der Komplex erstreckt sich auf insgesamt 15 Hektar: Zwei Hektar entfallen auf Hightech-Gewächshäuser. Die übrige Fläche wird für offene Feldproduktion und Infrastruktur genutzt. Zurzeit arbeiten circa 70 Festangestellte sowie mehr als 100 Saisonarbeitskräfte an dem neuen Standort. Die meisten Mitarbeiter kommen aus der Umgebung und wurden intern ausgebildet.
Hohe Nachhaltigkeitsstandards und Engagement für soziale Verantwortung
Der Standort erfüllt alle BASF-Standards für Gesundheit, Sicherheit und Umweltschutz und geht damit über die in Äthiopien üblichen Nachhaltigkeitsanforderungen hinaus. Um den ökologischen Fußabdruck zu reduzieren, werden hauptsächlich erneuerbare Energiequellen zur Stromerzeugung genutzt. Die Gewächshäuser werden über Solarpanele beheizt. Außerdem verfügt die Anlage über eine eigene Kläranlage und alle anfallenden Abfälle können vor Ort recycelt werden.
Zudem engagiert sich BASF in zahlreichen sozialen Initiativen in der Umgebung des Standorts. „Ich bin sehr stolz, dass wir neben der Verteilung von Saatgut an Kleinbauern in Äthiopien auch aktiv an Projekten zur Wiederaufforstung und zur Kontrolle von Bodenerosion in der Gegend beteiligt sind“, sagt Ben Depraetere, Geschäftsführer von Nunhems Ethiopia PLC und Leiter des BASF-Gemüsesaatgutgeschäfts in Äthiopien. „Wir wollen die lokale Bevölkerung unterstützen. Deshalb versorgen wir zum Beispiel die Gemeinden rund um unseren Standort mit sauberem Trinkwasser, haben in den Bau neuer Straßeninfrastruktur investiert und einen Fonds eingerichtet, um Arbeitsprojekte für arbeitslose junge Menschen aus der Umgebung zu schaffen.“
