Innovating the tomato category
‘The future of fresh tomatoes is here!’ is the theme of the online Global Tomato Congress on 16 March. Vegetable breeding company Rijk Zwaan will be sharing its vision on the future of the tomato category in two online sessions during the event. One session will analyse research into consumer preferences and tastes, and the other will show the effects of the pandemic on the German retail market. The congress is free to attend.
“Fruitnet’s global tomato congress is extremely valuable for the entire fresh produce supply chain. That’s why we’re not only a proud sponsor, but are also happy to contribute to the content,” explains Jan Doldersum from Rijk Zwaan.
Consumer research in the Retail Center
The vegetable breeding company’s first contribution will be a live session streamed from the Rijk Zwaan Retail Center in Berlin. Jörg Werner and Annette Meeder will explain more about the consumer’s path to purchase. They will also demonstrate how Rijk Zwaan is continuously conducting consumer research, such as by using innovative tools such as eye-tracking glasses. How coronavirus trends are impacting the tomato category
In the second live session, Jan Doldersum and Jörg Werner will reveal how trends in the COVID-19 era have changed the German retail market. Consumers are buying more fresh and healthy food, doing more home cooking, have discovered online shopping and prefer to buy from local suppliers. “We will use real-life examples to illustrate how those trends are affecting the tomato category,” continues Doldersum.
