Syngenta celebrates ten year anniversary with C$500,000 milestone donation to Food Banks Canada

Guelph, Ontario, Canada
 November 15, 2010

Syngenta is pleased to mark its 10 year anniversary by making a $25,000 donation to the Syngenta Rural FoodshareTM Initiative. This brings the company’s total donation to Food Banks Canada to $500,000 since Syngenta was inaugurated in 2000.

“For the past 10 years, we have enthusiastically supported the good work of organizations that serve the communities where our customers live and work, such as Food Banks Canada,” says Jay Bradshaw, President of Syngenta Canada. “The Rural FoodshareTM Initiative was our first Giving Back program 10 years ago and the inspiration for our ongoing Giving Back to Agriculture program today. Giving Back to Agriculture has now grown to provide donations and support to nearly 200 worthy organizations in agricultural communities across Canada. I can’t think of a better way to commemorate our 10 year anniversary than through this milestone donation to the Syngenta Rural Foodshare Initiative.”

“Rural food banks face many challenges related to accessing food and raising funds,” says Katharine Schmidt, Executive Director, Food Banks Canada. “There has been a significant increase in the number of Canadians turning to food banks for assistance. And we know that small towns face the added burden of transporting food to where it’s most needed. We truly appreciate the commitment of Syngenta to helping rural food banks make a bigger difference in their communities.”

Syngenta was formed 10 years ago through the merger of the agribusiness arms of Astra Zeneca and Novartis to create the first global pure agribusiness. The name Syngenta derives from both Greek and Latin and means ‘bringing people together.’ Through the Giving Back to Agriculture program, Syngenta Canada helps to bring people together in their respective communities, through partnerships, education, sponsorships and donations, to achieve the company’s mandate of bringing plant potential to life.
