After some three years of planning and construction, KWS opened the additional new laboratory building "BioTechnikum 2" in Einbeck on July 1, 2020. The building not only creates more space and offers state-of-the-art workplaces, it also opens up new opportunities for collaboration. With works from the "Art meets Science" project, art will also be part of "BiT2" right from the beginning.
“The growth of KWS and resulting need for additional laboratory capacity made the new building to the east of the existing BioTechnikum necessary. KWS is investing around 20 million euros in BioTechnikum 2 and thereby once again demonstrates its commitment to Einbeck as a research site," said Dr. Léon Broers, the member of the KWS Executive Board responsible for research. The three-story laboratory and office building has 2,350 square meters of laboratory space.
About 200 colleagues will work in the new BiT2. Many of them have already moved into the spaces and are benefiting from the mainly short distances. “During the planning stage, care was taken to ensure that, for example, the respective work areas are located on one floor if possible, thus facilitating mutual exchange," said Dr. Jürgen Schweden, Global Head of Research and Services. Open areas around the break rooms invite people to meet and talk. In general, plenty of glass and openness ensure a high level of transparency. The laboratories can be flexibly reorganized in case the requirements for the layout change in the future.
A classic inauguration ceremony did not take place due to coronavirus, but there was still a great deal for employees to see and marvel at: At almost the same time they moved into the building, large format photos of KWS researchers who took part in the "Art meets Science" project had been hung up in BiT2. "A project where we design and beautify our new environment for ourselves. A project where creativity, science and art were joined together. And a project where the courage to try something new, close collaboration and commitment – we received over 200 suggestions – led to a remarkable result," said Schweden.
Starting with the planning and implementation stage, KWS paid attention to state-of-the-art construction methods and forward-looking energy standards, while taking into account the high expectations for aesthetics and an appealing working environment. Numerous companies from the Einbeck region were involved in the construction of the building. With its façade, the new building integrates into the overall structural concept of the location and it is particularly energy-efficient: The building uses just 55 percent of the energy of a reference building and thereby meets the KFW 55 standard, which far exceeds legal requirements.

KWS weiht neues Forschungsgebäude ein
Nach rund drei Jahren Planung und Bauzeit hat KWS am 1. Juli 2020 das neue zusätzliche Laborgebäude „BioTechnikum 2“ in Einbeck eröffnet. Das Gebäude schafft nicht nur mehr Platz und bietet hochmoderne Arbeitsplätze, sondern sorgt für neue Möglichkeiten der Zusammenarbeit. Mit Werken aus dem Projekt „Art meets Science“ zieht von Beginn an auch Kunst ins „BiT2“ ein.
„Das Wachstum der KWS und der damit bedingte Bedarf an zusätzlichen Laborkapazitäten machten den Neubau östlich des bestehenden BioTechnikums erforderlich. KWS investiert rund 20 Millionen Euro in das BioTechnikum 2 und bekennt sich damit einmal mehr zum Forschungsstandort Einbeck“, sagte Dr. Léon Broers, im KWS Vorstand zuständig für die Forschung. Das dreistöckige Labor- und Bürogebäude verfügt über 2.350 Quadratmeter Laborfläche.
Gut 200 Kolleginnen und Kollegen werden im neuen BiT2 arbeiten. Viele haben bereits die Räumlichkeiten bezogen und profitieren von meist kurzen Wegen. „Bei der Planung wurde darauf geachtet, dass sich zum Beispiel die jeweiligen Arbeitsbereiche möglichst auf einer Etage befinden und der gemeinsame Austausch damit leichter fällt“, sagte Forschungsleiter Dr. Jürgen Schweden. Offene Bereiche an den Teeküchen laden zum Treffen und Kommunizieren ein. Generell sorgen viel Glas und Offenheit für ein hohes Maß an Transparenz. Die Labore lassen sich flexibel umgestalten, falls sich in Zukunft die Anforderungen an die Aufteilung ändern sollten.
Eine klassische Einweihungsfeier fand bedingt durch das Coronavirus nicht statt, dennoch gab es für die Mitarbeiter viel zu sehen und zu bestaunen: Denn praktisch mit dem Einzug wurden auch die groß ausgedruckten Fotos der am Projekt „Art meets Science“ beteiligten Forscherinnen und Forscher von KWS im BiT2 aufgehängt. „Ein Projekt, bei dem wir unser neues Umfeld für uns gestalten und verschönern. Ein Projekt, wo Kreativität, Wissenschaft und Kunst zusammengekommen sind. Und ein Projekt, bei dem Mut zu etwas Neuem, enge Zusammenarbeit und Engagement – wir haben über 200 Vorschläge erhalten – zu einem bemerkenswerten Ergebnis geführt haben“, sagte Schweden.
Schon bei der Planung und Umsetzung hat KWS auf modernste Baumethoden und vorausschauende Energiestandards geachtet und dabei gleichzeitig die hohen Ansprüche an die Ästhetik und ein ansprechendes Arbeitsumfeld berücksichtigt. An der Konstruktion des Gebäudes waren zahlreiche Unternehmen aus der Region Einbeck beteiligt. Der Neubau fügt sich mit seiner Fassade in das bauliche Gesamtkonzept am Standort ein und ist besonders energieeffizient: Das Gebäude benötigt nur 55 Prozent der Energie eines Referenzbaus und erfüllt somit die Norm KFW 55 Standard, die deutlich über die gesetzlichen Anforderungen hinausgeht.
