“Dance with the one that brought you” may be a line from a country song from several years back, but it’s also an important consideration for rice farmers looking to finalize their seed decisions this season. Planting varieties that are proven performers on your farm, ones that have consistently won their place and provided the results you’re looking for, is an important step toward managing your crop for success.
Over the years, Horizon Ag varieties like CL111, CL151 and CL153 have provided Southern rice farmers with strong yields, effective and cost-efficient weed control and superior milling quality, resulting in them being among the top varieties planted in the region. And in 2020, Horizon Ag and our retail partners have reduced the price for many of these top-performing Clearfield® varieties and are offering 0%1 APR financing to enable you to maximize opportunities for profitability when planting them.
Consider the advantages they offer and the place these varieties, now at a lower price, have on your farm:
CL111: A very early semi-dwarf rice variety that has been grown in all Southern states and is extremely popular due to its excellent first- and second-crop yield potential. Its dependability as a strong ratoon crop performer has helped it rank among the top-planted varieties in the Deep South. CL111 also produces a highly marketable grain that’s accepted both domestically and internationally.
CL151: A very early semi-dwarf variety that has been planted on more rice acreage in the region than any other Clearfield® variety or hybrid over the past 10 years. During that time, it has been proven to have the highest yield potential of any pure-line variety while also milling well. Many farmers routinely add CL151 to their planting mix to maximize yield potential while taking advantage of the effective weed control provided by the Clearfield Production System for rice.
CL153: A very early semi-dwarf rice variety that is widely adapted from Texas to Missouri and contains the pitA gene that confers broad-spectrum blast resistance to all prevalent blast races in the Southern United States. CL153 packages high yield potential, blast tolerance and outstanding milling quality advances in a plant that also offers excellent standability. As a result, it has been the number one planted variety in Louisiana the past two seasons and has significantly grown in popularity throughout the South.
In addition, if you have fields infested with weedy rice, this season is the time to take steps to bring them back into profitable production with Horizon Ag variety PVL01 and the Provisia® Rice System. The technology, launched in 2018, has provided farmers a critically needed new weed management system. Since then, farmers have used Provisia rice to dramatically clean up fields infested with herbicide-resistant weeds, often at a lower cost for weed control than other systems or conventional rice. PVL01 also has outstanding vigor and tillers well, as well as provides outstanding milling quality.
Even if you don’t have serious weedy rice problems, practicing good stewardship will pay off this year and for the future. With no other new rice weed control systems expected in the next decade, putting Provisia rice in a recommended rotation will help keep it an effective tool and also extend the effectiveness of your Clearfield rice so that it also remains a viable, effective option.
And finally, for enhanced financial flexibility in 2020, you can take advantage of fixed 0%1 APR financing on Horizon Ag seed and BASF crop protection products for the coming year, through a Multi-Use Account from John Deere Financial. Eligible products include Clearfield varieties CL111, CL151, CL153, CL163, CLL15, CLM04 and CLJ01, followed by Clearpath® herbicide or Newpath® herbicide; Provisia varieties PVL01 and PVL02 followed by Provisia herbicide; and BASF crop protection products applied to rice acres — Beyond® herbicide, Facet® L herbicide, Sharpen® herbicide or Prowl® H2O herbicide.
