On the afternoon of Friday 14 September, Rijk Zwaan officially opened its brand-new R&D facility on Eerste Kruisweg in Fijnaart. This extension gives the international vegetable breeding company the necessary space to further expand its research activities.

The construction project, which started back in November 2016, has connected two new buildings to the existing one, resulting in approximately 65 percent more space. The buildings are interconnected by a newly created atrium in the centre, which serves as the canteen and a presentation and reception area. In addition to the new-build project, Rijk Zwaan has renovated the existing offices and laboratories for molecular biological and cellular biological research.
Room for growth
Thanks to this expansion, Rijk Zwaan has gained more room to grow and modernise its research activities. Fijnaart is home to Rijk Zwaan’s biotechnological research centre and is a breeding location for open-field crops. Around 350 employees are based at the facility in total.
Continuously launching new vegetable varieties that meet the needs of both growers and consumers requires extensive research, and Rijk Zwaan invests around 30 percent of its annual revenue in research and development, equating to approximately 10 million euro per month.
“It takes a lot of people and a lot of expertise to develop a new variety. That’s why I’m so happy with the terrific new lab and all the extra workspaces, but also with the wonderful atrium. The atrium is now the beating heart of this facility – a place where our people can come together, forge contacts and share ideas and concerns. It’s a place for collaboration”, said Managing Director Kees Reinink during the opening ceremony.

A look inside
On Wednesday evening Rijk Zwaan had invited a number of local residents to see inside the new Fijnaart facility. “It’s important to us that local residents are involved in new-build projects right from the start”, explains Communication Specialist Steven van Paassen. “We celebrated the end of this project together by organising a presentation and guided tour of the building, and giving our neighbours a peek behind the scenes.”
On Saturday Rijk Zwaan held its latest ‘Family Festival’ – a special employee event organised once every six years. This year, employees had the chance to show their family and friends what goes on at the facility and the results of all the building and renovation work. At Rijk Zwaan the top priority is to offer employees an enjoyable job.
Since Monday 17 September the Rijk Zwaan Demo Weeks have been under way in Fijnaart. From now until 26 October, the vegetable breeding company is showing its horticultural customers, vegetable processors and retail clients how much it has to offer in open-field crops. Visitors can also take a look at the new building while they are there.

The extension in Fijnaart was designed by the architectural firm called RoosRos Architecten, which also designed new buildings for Rijk Zwaan’s head office and the SQC in De Lier. As a result, those buildings are all visually linked by sharing a similar look. The construction and completion of the project went entirely according to plan.
Rijk Zwaan develops vegetable varieties and sells the seeds produced from them in more than 100 countries. The independent family-run company is among the top five in the global vegetable seed market and is characterised by a people-focused approach. More than 3,000 employees in over 30 countries work enthusiastically to provide products and services that add value for the market. The company headquarters is based in De Lier in the Netherlands.

El viernes 14 de septiembre, Rijk Zwaan inauguró oficialmente sus nuevas instalaciones de I+D en Eerste Kruisweg, Fijnaart. Esta ampliación proporciona a la compañía de mejora hortícola el espacio necesario para aumentar sus actividades de investigación.
Ampliación del 65 por ciento
El proyecto de construcción, que comenzó en noviembre de 2016, ha conectado dos nuevos edificios con el ya existente, lo que se traduce en un aumento de espacio de un 65%. Los edificios están conectados por un nuevo atrio en el centro, que da servicio como cantina y como área de recepción y presentaciones. Además del proyecto de nueva construcción, Rijk Zwaan ha renovado las actuales oficinas y laboratorios de investigación de biología molecular y biología celular.
Espacio para crecer
Gracias a esta expansión, Rijk Zwaan ha ganado más espacio para crecer y modernizar sus actividades de investigación. Fijnaart es la sede del centro de investigación biotecnológico de Rijk Zwaan y una estación de mejora para cultivos de aire libre. En total trabajan en estas instalaciones unos 350 empleados.
El lanzamiento continuo de nuevas variedades hortícolas que cumplan las necesidades de productores y consumidores requiere un amplio trabajo de investigación, y Rijk Zwaan invierte alrededor del 30 por ciento de sus ingresos anuales en investigación y desarrollo.

El atrio es ahora el corazón de estas instalaciones, un lugar donde nuestra gente puede reunirse, crear contactos y compartir ideas e inquietudes. Es un espacio para la colaboración", comenta el director general Kees Reinink durante la ceremonia de inauguración.

El miércoles por la tarde Rijk Zwaan invitó a un grupo de residentes locales a visitar las nuevas instalaciones de Fijnaart. "Es importante para nosotros que los residentes locales estén involucrados en proyectos de nueva construcción desde el principio", explica el especialista en comunicación Steven van Paassen. "Hemos celebrado juntos el final de este proyecto organizando una presentación y una visita guitada al edificio, ofreciendo a nuestros vecinos un vistazo al interior."

El sábado, Rijk Zwaan celebró su último "Festival de la Familia", un evento especial para los empleados organizado cada seis años. Este año, los empleados tuvieron la oportunidad de mostrar a su familia y amigos lo que ocurre en estas instalaciones y los resultados de todo el trabajo de construcción y renovación. Desde el lunes 17 de septiembre están en marcha las "Demo Weeks" de Rijk Zwaan en Fijnaart. Hasta el 26 de octubre, la compañía de mejora hortícola está mostrando a sus clientes hortícolas, procesadores hortícolas y clientes de retail toda su oferta en cultivos de aire libre. Los visitantes también pueden echar un vistazo al nuevo edificio durante su visita a la demo.
Parecido visual con De Lier
La extensión en Fijnaart ha sido diseñada por el estudio de arquitectura RoosRos Architecten, que también diseñó nuevos edificios para las oficinas centrales de Rijk Zwaan y el SQC en De Lier. Como resultado, esos edificios tienen un parecido visual y comparten un aspecto similar. La construcción y terminación del proyecto se han llevado a cabo totalmente de acuerdo al plan.
