What is it like to be a scientist? Teenagers from across Norfolk have enjoyed an access-all-areas experience at the Norwich Bioscience Institutes

Norwich, United Kingdom
July 14, 2016

Teenagers from across Norfolk have enjoyed an access-all-areas experience at the Norwich Bioscience Institutes this week, during our annual Year 10 Science Camp.

The students are being trained in key experimental techniques and are learning about cutting edge science; including research into antimicrobial resistance and making vaccines from plant.

In addition to group workshops and networking sessions with scientists the students are carrying out work experience placements in lab across the John Innes Centre, the Institute of Food Research, the Earlham Institute and The Sainsbury Laboratory.

Science Camp lead organiser, Samantha Fox, said,
'This is an amazing and unique experience designed to inspire the scientists of the future, we need to encourage more young people to consider careers in STEM (science Technology, Engineering and Maths).'

The students were selected by application to take part in this event and are from many different schools across the county.

Sophie Brown of Fakenham Academy Norfolk said,
'I’ve really enjoyed the experience so far, especially extracting DNA from Blueberries.'

Vlogger and television presenter Maddie Moate visited the students at JIC  on Tuesday to find out more about what they were learning and how the experience has influenced their views of science.
