New EuropaBio factsheet highlights the importance of intellectual property protection for innovation in agriculture

Brussels, Belgium
May 23, 2016

Intellectual property protection, including plant variety protection rights (PVPs) and patents, helps drive innovation for more productive and sustainable seeds.

Innovation in plant breeding has already brought numerous societal benefits, increasing productivity and farmers’ incomes, benefiting SMEs, and reducing waste, energy consumption and pollution.

As our world’s population grows and the productivity increase of many crops reaches a plateau, we need to encourage even greater innovation, whilst conserving natural resources and maintaining biodiversity.

Modern plant breeding needs and benefits from the protection of both plant variety rights and patents.

In this new factsheet developed by EuropaBio, find out why plant-related IPR, including patents and PVPs, are instrumental for catalysing sustainable and innovative development of the EU and creating jobs and growth.
