Creating tomorrow’s wheat

What if our daily bread could no longer be taken for granted? With exceptional weather conditions becoming the norm, wheat harvests are under threat. Are new varieties the answer?

Byron Richards sits contentedly in the driver’s cab of his bright yellow New Holland harvester. He’s doing his rounds on the huge wheat fields near Belfield in Southwest North Dakota. The cutter is rotating, slicing row after row of stalks. On the back of the machine, golden wheat grains gather on the trailer.

Richards looks constantly at a small screen in front of him, documenting the current cutting rate, the yield and the cereal’s humidity. It looks fine. In a good season, the farmer doesn’t mind sitting on his harvester for up to 12 hours a day to bring in the winter wheat.
