Implementing the Horizon Ag's Provisia Rice System on your farm

PVL01 fully headed in Kaplan, LA.

We are starting to get a lot of calls about Provisia™ for 2018, so I will address some of the most common questions. The Provisia rice system is the new companion system to Clearfield® rice. Even though it is a companion system, there are some things you need to keep in mind when deciding whether to plant Provisia and determining which fields are the best candidates.

Weedy rice infested field in Kaplan, LA.

The field should have a weedy rice or resistant grass problem.
The primary reason Provisia rice is being brought to market is to clean up fields with weedy rice (rice volunteers that are resistant to the “imi” herbicides Newpath® and Beyond®). Secondarily, the Provisia rice system will also address multi-herbicide-resistant grass.

Provisia rice cannot follow Clearfield rice where Newpath was used in the previous year.
Planting Provisia rice the following year after using Newpath would be like planting conventional rice after using Newpath. Both are susceptible to Newpath herbicide as it is residual in the soil. Is one year out of Clearfield enough to diminish the residual Newpath in the soil where it has been used continually for multiple years? This question is very difficult to answer. I believe we will see issues on zero grade where continuous Clearfield has been grown and the fields were flooded during the winter. Fall tillage and subsequent exposure to sunlight help to break down residual Newpath in the soil. I think some of these fields could take two years out of the Clearfield system.

Provisia herbicide is not residual in nature, so Clearfield or conventional rice can follow Provisia.
Provisia herbicide is quizalofop-p-butyl. This herbicide is strictly a grass herbicide with no residual, so incorporating the use of residual herbicides pre-emerge and delayed pre-emerge will be crucial. I really like Sharpen® herbicide applied with either Command pre or Prowl delayed pre. From what I’ve seen, these herbicides bring a lot to the table in the Provisia system.

Tank-mix recommendations with Provisia will be limited.
We hope to know more this fall, but it seems that tank-mixing other herbicides with Provisia could cause issues. I think there will be several we can get by with once we have all the data in, but we do know that there is one that should be avoided. Propanil-containing products seem to always cause antagonism. In fact, these can also cause issues when applied separately too close to the Provisia application. However, Provisia is a very good grass material, so I don’t think we will be losing a lot by not using Propanil.

If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to call the Horizon Ag staff.
