Automated phenotyping systems that combine several data points per sample can deliver terabytes of data from plants growing in greenhouses or fields. These large data sets must then be processed and translated in a meaningful way.
A recent review by Rahaman and colleagues discusses various sensor types and their importance for plant research and provides an overview of different plant phenotyping platforms that use such sensors (Rahaman et al., 2015).
The authors describe software tools that convert sensor data into parameters, which in turn are related to properties of the plants.
Using elaborated analysis pipelines, processed parameters are combined with further information about the plants, such as molecular analysis and data on environmental conditions during the experiment. In this way, comprehensive sets of data relating to plant characteristics can be generated giving further insight into plant functionality.
