Legume inoculation pays

Australia
February 26, 2013

Inoculating legumes with rhizobia (soil bacteria that fix nitrogen) can be advantageous for growers in the southern cropping region. Inoculation can produce substantial increases in legume nodulation, grain and biomass yield, nitrogen fixation and post-crop soil nitrate levels.

Those benefits and more are outlined in a new Rhizobial Inoculants Fact Sheet, published by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

The Fact Sheet states that there are 39 different inoculant groups produced commercially in Australia, and formulations for inoculants include peat, clay and peat granules, freeze-dried cultures and liquid cultures.

The publication provides growers with useful information about the various inoculants groups, the products available, when to inoculate and links to other resources.

Included in the January-February edition of GRDC’s Ground Cover magazine, the Fact Sheet can also be viewed and downloaded via www.grdc.com.au/GRDC-FS-rhizobialinoculants.
