Pulse growers from across southern Queensland and northern New South Wales are invited to check out the newest mungbean varieties and the latest research into row spacing, water use efficiency and fusasium, as part of a field walk at Hermitage Research Station, Warwick, on Wednesday (March 28).
Grains Reseach and Development Corporation (GRDC) Farming Systems, Soils and Agronomy Manager North Kaara Klepper said the field walk, which is being hosted by the Australian Mungbean Association Industry, was an opportunity to hear from some of the industry’s leading researchers.
“This event offers growers, agronomists and industry stakeholders an invaluable chance to hear about the current GRDC investment in breeding and agronomy as well as see the newest varieties in the paddock,” she said.
“There will also be up-to-date information about pests and diseases, which all helps inform grower decisions on-farm.”
Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) pulse breeder Col Douglas will present the latest information on mungbean breeding, as well as guide growers through a field walk featuring demonstration plots of new varieties.
DAF entomologist Liz Williams will provide an update on paddock pests, while DAF agronomist Kerry McKenzie will offer information on the latest research findings when it comes to agronomy, row spacing and irrigation.
Other presenters include DAF’s pathologist Lisa Kelly, who will explain how growers can manage fusarium, while Paul McIntosh from Pulse Australia and Mark Schmidt from the Australian Mungbean Association will offer insights into the industry and an overview of mungbean marketing strategies.
