The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of 17 new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include bean, bluegrass, cotton, lettuce, ryegrass, soybean and wheat.
The 17 certificates are issued under the Plant Variety Protection (PVP) Act, which provides legal intellectual property rights protection to developers of new varieties of plants. PVP promotes progress in agriculture in the public interest through encouraging the development of novel varieties of sexually reproduced plants and offers legal protection for those who breed, develop, or discover them.
PVP certification requires that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.
