Many crops of oilseed rape are looking well, especially those drilled before the August bank holiday weekend.  However, there are fields where damage from flea beetle, slugs & pigeons means redrilling is a serious consideration. 

Flea beetle pressure has been moderate to high, and drill date has played a big part in mitigating the effects of the adult feeding damage. However, larvae can still begin to enter the plants, meaning that the pest can impact an otherwise healthy looking crop.

Hybrid barley is a great option for growers looking to redrill failed WOSR crops with a cereal. 
 

High yielding:

Hyvido hybrid barley is a high yielding feed barley option which can be drilled well into the middle of October and on into November, if conditions allow.  Drill timing should always be based on local conditions and in particular: seedbed quality, soil type, soil moisture, soil temperature, weather, drill type and seed rate. 

Grass weed suppression:

Hyvido hybrid barley varieties are uniquely powered by hybrid vigour. This means they are very competitive and will provide suppression of grass weeds such as black-grass, ryegrass and bromes. 

Early maturity:

Hybrid barley is early to mature. This means it will be ready to harvest earlier than later maturing varieties, spreading the farm work load and providing an excellent entry into WOSR for the 2024 drilling season. 

Take-all impact:

Syngenta trials have shown that hybrid barley is less impacted by Take-all than winter wheat, and in a second cereal slot does not require an application of silthiofam seed treatment. This makes it an attractive option over wheat when choosing a cereal to drill following a failed WOSR crop.
