We're excited to launch our first year of participatory trials. Will you help us find the best varieties for the Upper Midwest?
Join us as we explore the best green and red summer romaine lettuces for the Upper Midwest, from Minneapolis to Des Moines to Madison to Chicago. We're also testing top open pollinated and heirloom cucumbers, and new cilantro varieties.
We've been using SeedLinked for years with Seed Savers Exchange and the University of Wisconsin. The SeedLinked platform makes it easy to track your trials and collect data, chat with other growers and DSC staff participating in the trial, and share pictures and updates.

There are some great new cilantro varieties that have been coming out, but most of them are bred for California and Florida production - help us find the best option for the Upper Midwest.
Growers will assess 4 varieties for vigor, upright stature and ease of harvest, flavor, yield, and bolting resistance. You'll receive 20 seeds of each variety.

We're surveying the diversity of superb romaine varieties from breeder Frank Morton to see which ones perform best in the Upper Midwest. This trial is on green romaine, and there is also a red and dappled romaine trial available. Both romaine trials are focused on bolting tolerance, flavor, and productivity.
Growers will receive 30 seeds of each variety and can direct seed or transplant. We ask that you evaluate at least 10 individual plants to maturity, and let at least 5 bolt so we can assess bolting tolerance.
