Mentoring young generation of breeders in tomato varietal development in The Philippines during the pandemic

The Bureau of Plant Industry - Los Baños National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (BPI-LBNCRDPSC) is presently conducting a project entitled, “Development of Vegetable Varieties in Asia Region” funded by the Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI).  

The project has conducted a refresher training on “Varietal Development of Tomato” at the BPI-LBNCRDPSC Multipurpose Hall, Timugan, Los Baños, Laguna on March 22, 2021, which was participated by 15 young researchers and interns. The training is a component of the project which aims to equip young researchers about tomato breeding in the Philippines.

Through this activity, trained researchers are expected to broaden their knowledge on varietal development especially on lowland vegetables in which the Center is focusing on.

Ms. Niña R. Rosales, Agriculturist II and the tomato breeder of the Center, served as the Resource Person and gave lectures on botanical description, crop management, crop protection and varietal development of tomato.

The standard guidelines in the registration of variety to the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) was also discussed as part of the training.

At the end of the activity, participants showed interest in learning the science of plant breeding in tomato.
