Canadian canola is already 95% biotech

August 24, 2012

Source: Crop Biotech Update

Agricultural biotechnology in Canada is very much at par with its neighboring country, the United States, reports the USDA FAS GAIN recently. Canada ranked fifth in the world for hectares of land planted with biotech crops in 2010 and 2011, according to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications.

Current estimates using a new methodology shows 80 percent to 95 percent of total canola in Canada is biotech at 10.5 million hectares. Other biotech crops in Canada are canola, corn, and soybeans, with sugar beets being planted in relatively small areas. The country also plant biotech crops with three stacked traits in corn: herbicide tolerant and resistant to corn borer and corn rootworm.
