Research Associate, Plant Transformation and Tissue Culture

Location: Davis, California, USA

About Origin Prime
Origin Prime is focused on developing a next generation approach to improve crops for ensuring global food security. We utilize state of the art technology for gene discovery and are creating new products based on non-GM approaches.

Position Summary
We are looking for a Research Associate, Plant Transformation and Tissue Culture to support – plant tissue culture, plant transformation and molecular biology. Our ideal candidate is excited about working with plants and has experience with tissue culture techniques. Experience with plant transformation is a huge plus. The candidate will work under the supervision of the plant tissue culture lead but must be self-motivated. The candidate must be comfortable working in greenhouse and field conditions. Legal authorization to work in the United States is required.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out plant tissue culture projects. This includes media preparation, tissue disinfection, establish sterile explants and routine and regular sub culturing.
  • Initiate and maintain bacterial cultures for plant transformation purposes.
  • Establish and maintain identity of callus, shoots, plants, flats, genotype samples and seeds via stake and labeling methods.
  • Conduct sub-culturing and transplanting activities.
  • Carry out plant growth/care projects to include batch soil mixing, seed imbibing or priming, seed planting and watering.
  • Utilize a database to maintain inventory of tissue culture experiments, research plants, seeds and crosses including pedigree and crossing information.
  • Perform general laboratory duties such as media and reagent preparation.
  • Maintain a detailed online lab notebook.
  • Write and present status reports at weekly meetings. 

Education and Experience

  • B.A. or B.Sc. in plant science, biology or a related field.

Required experience:

  • 1+ years of hands-on experience with tissue culture and plant transformation techniques.
  • Experience in performing general laboratory duties such as preparing media, buffers, etc.
  • Familiarity with MS Office software and working with databases.
  • Strong organizational skills

Preferred experience:

  • Standard molecular biology laboratory techniques

Job Type: Full time
Pay: $40-$60K, depending on prior experience
