To further develop our business in the Americas, we are seeking top-notch talents for an Associate Breeder, Melon.
Job Summary
The Associate Breeder will work closely with the Crop Breeding Manager and would be responsible for the effective implementation of assigned breeding trials and breeding activities within the scope of the long-term strategic crop master plan for melon.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Crop Breeding Manager to develop breeding strategy for melon for Central/Latin America markets.
- Plan, implement and manage melon on-station breeding trials and other assigned trials in other breeding/testing locations.
- Organize and supervise all aspects of breeding trials, including sowing and planting, pollinations, plant selection, data collection, seed harvesting, etc.
- Collect and characterize new germplasm and develop new breeding populations. Multiply and maintain breeder seeds and/or foundation seeds by working closely with Foundation Seed team.
- Manage all assigned melon germplasm and other breeding collections and ensure that germplasm information and trial data are incorporated in the Phenome Networks crop breeding database.
- Consolidate and analyze breeding and trial data and submit trial and progress report(s) to direct supervisor for review and discussion. Present status report and progress of assigned breeding program(s).
- Oversee trial expenses and other OPEX within approved budget.
- Supervise and train melon support staff and workers.
- Develop good working knowledge of advanced plant breeding and genetics.
- Interact closely with Product Development Support and commercial team in order to understand market requirements and needs of melon in target markets.
- Work closely with other support functions (pathology, biotechnology, foundation seeds, stock seeds, etc.)
- Enhance practical knowledge and stay abreast of developments of genetics and breeding technology.
The Ideal Candidate
- Any nationality who is willing to relocate to Guatemala
- In possession of a US visum, must be able to travel freely within the Americas;
- Has MSc or PhD degree in Genetics, Plant Breeding or related field
- With minimum 5 years experience in commercial plant breeding
- Has above average proficiency in the English language (written and oral)
- Capable of planning, organizing and executing plans to action
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Driven to deliver results in collaboration with others
Location
Most breeding activities will take place on our station in Guatemala, with trials in Yuma (AZ, USA) and/ or Woodland (Ca, USA)
