The Position

The Genomics Research and Application Manager will be responsible for the formulation and execution of the strategic Genomics Research and Application plan with its associated budget.  The Manager is not only responsible for successful developing and running genomics and molecular marker projects with the breeders but also for implementing molecular markers for routine applications. Installing and maintaining a state of the art Bio Informatics database management system is another key responsibility for this role. Next to that the manager will also be responsible for the identification and assessment of new technologies (technology push), introduction and application of new technologies and leading and developing the team.

The position reports to the Managing Director Research & Development and is part of R&D Management Team (Research and Breeding).

The ideal candidate will have held significant responsibility and experience in a Biotechnology and Research driven environment in the Agribusiness, preferably with vegetable or plant knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

• End responsibility for formulating a strategic (5-years) Genomics Research and Application (GR&A) plan with an associated budget in close corporation with the R&D Team, which is in line with the Global R&D Strategic Plan and respective crop plans.
• End responsibility for executing the Genomics strategic plan successfully within the approved budget.
• Developing molecular marker projects with breeders.
• Leading a team of scientists in marker lab; presently strong in gel based markers; in the process of conversion to SNPs
• Development of markers for testing stock seed purity and hybrid seed purity in field and vegetable crops.
• Designing and development of molecular markers for important traits as suggested by the management / research group in vegetable crops besides corn and rice.
• Owner off all projects running in the departments of Genomics Research and Application.
• Implementation of markers for routine applications/high throughput.
• Identify and assess new technologies/markets (technology push) and partnership opportunities.
• Having state of the art knowhow of technologies and literature.
• Keep genomics research and application labs at up to date and in line with the company strategy and budgets.
• Developing and maintaining a good Bio Informatics database.
• Responsible for leading and developing of the GR&A Team.
• Contributing to the global IP (intellectual property) strategy.
• Developing and maintaining an international scientific network.
• Visiting key conferences and report on it (e.g. Plant Animal Genomics in San Diego or Plant Genomics Conference).

Experience and education

• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in research and application functions, including significant work in advanced biotechnology, preferably in vegetables or field crops.
• Several ears of direct management experience of other professional research and application personnel, with a proven track record of successful people development.
• Experience with Bio Informatics database management systems.
• Strong decision-making, communication (written and verbal), conflict resolution, presentation and objective-setting skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, meet mutual goals and attain desired results in a very dynamic environment.
• Demonstrated business acumen, feeling with financial matters, including proven capabilities in scouting and acting on research opportunities in the world.
• Demonstrated motivational leadership profile that fosters innovation, productivity and high-quality work in a research and development environment.
• PhD in molecular biology, plant genetics or closely related field.
• Experience in SNPs, QTL mapping and WGS.
• Interactions with geneticists / breeders will be an added advantage

Other position parameters

• The position is located in Bangalore, India.
• Amount of travelling will be 25% of the time.

Compensation

Base salary will be commensurate with experience, track record and ability and will be competitive in the market.
