Assistant Breeder I

Location: Beaver Crossing, Nebraska, USA

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this role, Assistant Breeder I, are to:

  • Assume responsibility for all US Winter Wheat parent line maintenance and purity increases;
  • Implement and develop inventory processes for two US Winter Wheat breeding programs;
  • Assist in data acquisition, curation, analysis and reporting for hybrid materials;
  • Utilize computers, GPS modules/systems, and appropriate computer software to produce seed for purity increase and maintenance of parent lines;
  • Manage proper seed handling and storage in accordance with stewardship guidelines;
  • Oversee the training and supervision of 2-8 third party contractors;
  • Assist research colleagues locally and globally as needed to accomplish team goals;
  • Ensure compliance and participation in Safety, Stewardship and Regulatory policies, while setting high standards of professional conduct;
  • Travel as needed domestically, approximately 10%.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Plant Science, Agronomy or related discipline;
  • Proficient computer skills needed to analyze data, prepare breeding books, input data;
  • Ability to learn new database and related computer systems;
  • Excellent communication and human relation skills;
  • Organizational and time management skills;
  • Familiarity and experience with Microsoft Office computer software packages.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Plant Breeding, Biology or related discipline;
  • Specialized knowledge of wheat agronomics and quality characteristics;
  • Field experience working with small grains or other crops;
  • Experience operating small plot research equipment;
  • Experience in greenhouse operations.
