Breeder/Senior Breeder (Vegetable crops)

Location: Bangalore, Karnataka, India

PURPOSE:

The successful candidate will be responsible for strategic planning & execution of plans to promote and coordinate research activities for breeding of vegetable crops. He will be responsible for all breeding activities of assigned crop.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

The primary responsibilities for this position include:

  • To make and prioritize research plans and objectives of assigned vegetable crop and prepare budget for that crop.
  • To strengthen germplasm base for assigned crop.
  • To create new product that is superior for target traits, stable in performance and acceptable to grower and consumers
  • To breed for disease resistance hybrids/ inbreds
  • To screen, evaluate and select proper inbreds and hybrids at target locations/environment
    • Selecting plants/entries with the desired attributes and assessing them for yield, disease resistance, improved adaptation and end-user quality.
    • To multiply most promising samples for further stages of evaluation/testing.
  • To maintain detailed records throughout the research and development cycle in breeding data management system.
  • To manage, support and train the technical and field staffs and to develop a good breeding team

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-graduation from a reputed institute.
  • 6-10 years of related work experience in vegetable breeding
  • Knowledge of growing of all vegetable crops, as well as the cultural practices being followed in different regions
  • Crop wise positioning of the company’s product in high sales potential areas
  • Thorough knowledge of fresh market vegetables grown in all the regions of the country
  • Ability to travel extensively in the country

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • The candidate should have breeding experience preferably in Okra/gourds.
  • Very good academic and professional knowledge on vegetable breeding and production technology.
  • Good ability of gathering and analyzing of facts and decide courses of action.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong Interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated, with a high level of time management and organizational skill.
  • Must be computer literate with knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all functional departments.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors even during inclement weather conditions.
  • Able to work independently, with little or no immediate supervision.
