Breeder, Intermediate Day Onion

Location: Australia

Magnus Kahl Seeds Pty Ltd is a privately owned company operating throughout Australia and various global markets. We are involved in breeding, production and marketing of a range of quality onion varieties.

Responsibilities
 
Research
      Optimizing the efficiency and output of the breeding program by designing and implementing new technologies and breeding methods in order to ensure a constant flow of commercially successful varieties.
 
Management of Information
         Design, evaluate and formulate the short-term breeding plan by means of drawing up trial data, preparing summary reports, giving feedback, making proposals and drawing conclusions about the breeding program in order to facilitate, and enable divisional and corporate decision making.
 
Breeding trials
      Design and plan the structure of the program, implement, evaluate, analyze, interpret and document breeding trials and their results in line with the breeding plan, guidelines and procedures.
 
Stock Seed 
         Manage and execute the increase and maintenance of basic stock seed in coordination with Management and Production departments in order to ensure the availability of required quantities and quality of basic stock seeds.
 
Administration
         Manage an accurate and detailed breeding journal and implement new IT systems to record further developments in order to enable the running of an efficient and effective breeding program.
 
Management
         Coordinate and communicate the breeding program activities to management and the sales technicians within the company and provide them with technical advice in order to meet agreed standards, time planning and budgets.
 
Market knowledge
         Liase with sales staff and management to develop and maintain an updated and broad vision on the market demands and translate market demands into breeding goals in order to be able to assist in market development.
 
Educational Qualifications Desired
  • Bachelor or Post Graduate Degree in horticulture, plant breeding, genetics or closely related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of horticultural practices and procedures, genetics and plant breeding. A special focus on allium breeding will be an advantage.
Skills and Experience Desired
  • Must be a team player but also able to work independently.
  • Past experience operating specialized breeding and research equipment required.
  • Bilingual skills an advantage (English is required)
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Functional competencies: analytical thinking, flexible, sound interpersonal skills, problem solving ability, innovative.
