Job Summary:
Milliken is seeking an exceptionally talented Scientist/Engineer to become an integral member of our Performance Colorants & Ingredients R&D team as a Formulation/Applications Engineer. This role will have primary responsibility for growing new business and supporting existing business through: formulation, application, and process development of agrochemical formulations.
The position is located at our corporate headquarters in Spartanburg, SC and reports to the Development Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define, develop, and evaluate formulation strategies and technologies
- Design, prepare, and test product concepts for new and improved Agrochemical formulations that deliver differentiated product performance and handling characteristics
- Understand and measure value of differentiated solution when compared to commercial alternatives
- Interface and coordinate activities with internal and external multi-disciplinary teams to enable data driven selection and product advancement
- Act as a champion for projects. Provide updates, including presentations and technical reports, to diverse internal and external audiences (Technology, Commercial, Regulatory, Quality, and Manufacturing)
- Limited travel to customer and industry partner sites will be required to support product development, evaluation and commercialization
Required Education & Skills/Experience
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, or closely related field of study
- Experienced in the following:
- Preparation of complex product mixtures and multiple formulation types for agrochemical applications (e.g. Seed treatment, fertilizer, and crop production)
- Assessment of formulation properties, compatibility, and physical stability
- Product commercialization of candidates developed
- Strong learning aptitude and agility
- Demonstrated innovation and critical thinking skills
- Self-motivated, with demonstrated ability to independently define and execute critical studies, and to develop and communicate recommendations
- Ability to work in a matrix environment with excellent relationship, networking, and collaboration skills
- Exceptional communication skills, with a proven ability to convey complex ideas in a clear, precise, and actionable manner
Desired Education & Skills/Experience
- Background in agrochemical selection and formulation development – preferably in seed treatment formulation
- Three or more years industry experience, preferably with agrochemical formulation development, or in other related industries – e.g., consumer products, paints & architectural coatings, or food formulations
- Formal education or relevant experience in agriculture, or more specifically horticulture, especially as it relates to the use of active ingredients and their use to influence plant health • Demonstrated cross-functional project leadership experience
- Understanding of various modes of action and benefits of different formulation types
- Working knowledge of experimental design and statistical methods
- Experience with development, scale-up, and transfer of production processes to commercial manufacturing
- Familiarity with the following formulation types: EC Emulsifiable concentrate, ES Emulsion for seed treatment, FS/FC Flowable concentrate for seed treatment, SC Suspension concentrate (= flowable concentrate)
