Rijk Zwaan Australia is led by a collegiate board of 2 directors, one who focuses on commercial issues and one who takes the responsibility for the R&D operations. Together they are responsible for managing the company in Australia, which is a subsidiary of Rijk Zwaan. Our activities focus on research, breeding, production and commerce, and we currently employ around 70 people Australia wide. Initially, the Manager R&D Operations will report to the local management, before taking over from one of the current directors and joining the collegiate board of RZ Australia after an appropriate training and orientation period. The Australian directors report to the RZ board based in The Netherlands.

You are responsible for the organisation and functioning of the Australian trial stations and the co-ordination of the planning of breeding trials. The Manager R&D Operations is in close contact with the breeding departments and breeding stations elsewhere in the world, where relevant breeding projects are carried out. You will take care that the breeding trials are commercially relevant and results are well communicated with the commercial team. This requires an understanding of the Australian vegetable seed market and close interactions with the commercial and product development teams of RZ Australia.

The Manager R&D Operations will network with the relevant Australian research institutes and universities and will be the key contact with government agencies. As a manager you have an important people orientated role, managing the R&D team in several stations across Australia. You will provide purpose, direction, and motivation for your team.

As director it is important to have a broad interest in all aspects of managing a company including fostering the Rijk Zwaan company culture, managing human and financial risks, legal compliance and the public image of the company.

We are seeking a person with:

  • A university education with knowledge of horticulture, plant physiology, plant pathology and breeding.
  • At least 10 years relevant experience
  • People oriented leadership skills
  • Positive thinking and attitude

You are able to think and act independently; to be a team player; think in long-term processes, maintaining a good balance between the long-term goals and short term demands. You have an open personality, good communication skills, you are trustworthy and sensitive to good advice. We are seeking a good leader and organiser with an international outlook, someone with an active and practical approach, orientated towards persevering and problem solving.
