The current role is the North American Canola Development Lead.
About the role
Based in Calgary, Alberta, this role will lead and coordinate an innovative breeding program and product development strategy, aimed at releasing new and superior canola products for North America. This position will also work with the Australian canola team to co-ordinate trait introgression, incorporation and testing for the company.
Implement and manage breeding and optimal field evaluation strategies for Canada (primary) and USA (secondary).
Primarily being responsible for:
- Conducting work requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard techniques, processes, and criteria for the program; o Devising new approaches to problems encountered, working with conventional practices, but also incorporating and managing complex features;
- Managing trialing programs;
- Planning, scheduling, conducting or coordinating detailed phases of work;
- Developing linkages with research programs between Canada and USA;
- Managing and supervising staff in various technical tasks associated with targeted plant selection, data collection, harvesting and seed preparations for sowing and quality screening.
- Coordinate and collaborate with third parties to deliver optimal field nursery data for breeding and seed production. This includes timely seed logistics for sowing, data collection and management of harvest samples for quality testing.
- Provide Industry feedback to Nuseed Management when appropriate, ensuring milestones are being communicated to the relevant internal parties.
- Manage an operational budget and cost centre.
- Coordinate and manage regulatory requirements for the program to ensure successful and efficient delivery of new Nuseed products for North America.
We are looking for someone who is Tertiary qualified with experience in plant breeding practices, preferably in Canada, experienced in Canadian cropping systems as it relates to Canola, and with at least five years experience in the seed industry at a research and development level. The incumbent must be knowledgeable in canola agronomy and have a sound understanding of canola industry activities and relevant research, breeding, pathology, and compliance regulations.
Commercial experience would be an asset.
