BASF GB Plant Science (GBP) is seeking an innovative and experienced professional for Stewardship Governance and Seed Quality Manager to be based in our Research Triangle Park (RTP) site in North Carolina, USA. The position supports the GBP biotechnology products and the BASF Agricultural Products Division (AP), non-GM herbicide tolerance traits. Stewardship Governance and Seed Quality Manager (1602995) – North Carolina, USA You will be responsible for leading a team consisting of a Contractor & Documentation Manager and a Non-conformance, Continuous Improvement, and Risk Manager. You will report to the Global Head of Stewardship Governance & Quality Control, based in the U.S.
Formula for Success: You Will…
- Support Global Head in development, maintenance, and optimization of the GBP global Stewardship Programs and the AP non-GM herbicide tolerance crops Stewardship Program.
- Implement Clearfield Care Protocols (CCP), a set of Stewardship Requirements for all areas of seed production and processing to mitigate risk from commingling of non-GM Clearfield herbicide tolerant seed with non-commercial GM seed. BASF out-licenses the Clearfield herbicide tolerance technology to seed partners globally and this role has responsibility for Stewardship oversight of those seed partners.
- Provide diagnostic support for the 3rd party laboratory accreditation program for DNA-based herbicide tolerant (HT) trait testing.
- Interact externally with approved customers to provide diagnostic support to BASF and approved customers, and internally with global marketing managers, development managers, and analytics managers to implement appropriate procedures and obtain and analyze results.
- Establish a global network of Stewardship professionals that will share best practices, tools, and materials while participating in ongoing communication activities and cross-functional exchanges.
- Assist with the governance function in stewardship with regard to all SOPs (e.g. consistency within stewardship, consistency with other BASF internal or external guidelines regulations etc.).
- Assist the Quality Management, Stewardship Governance & Quality Control, and Operations & Logistics function heads in defining Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Stewardship organization, taking part in consolidating and reporting on KPIs to upper management monthly/quarterly.
- Address key global Stewardship topics with internal customers and key stakeholders.
- Steer and manage the creation and revision of SOPs and related training material by the SOP owner / subject matter expert, driving these processes by working with Documentation Manager, Subject Matter Experts, Stakeholders and Quality Management personnel to ensure 1) timely creation/revision, 2) the process is accurately written and able to be performed, and 3) Quality Standards are met.
- Provide functional and administrative guidance to team members.
- Ensure that third party collaborators working with BASF (GBP and AP) products and technologies are adhering to the BASF stewardship requirements through process review, instruction, training and audit. Support audit efforts to third parties, as needed.
- Approximately 25%, including some international travel.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Ingredients for Success: What We Look For in You…
- A Ph.D. degree in a scientific discipline, such as molecular biology, plant biotechnology, horticulture or agronomy, or an M.S. degree with 8 years or a B.S. degree with more than 10 years’ experience in a biological or biotechnological science.
- Broad demonstrated understanding of plant biotech industry including underlying key scientific, regulatory, legal, public policy and technology acceptance issues.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in seed production, seed certification, field based seed research, or related function.
- Experience in non-conformance/continuous improvement process and strong analytical skills to question practices and improve approaches.
- Strong intercultural orientation and interest in a multicultural environment with the ability to lead and work with a multinational team.
- Demonstrated leadership and project management abilities.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience with Quality Management, preferably in seed/agriculture biotechnology.
Preferred:
- Multi-lingual with an emphasis on Spanish or Portuguese.
- Minimum of 2 years' supervisory experience.
- Broad understanding of international commercial grain trade including how public perception and acceptance of technology impacts grain and seed trade.
- Minimum two years’ experience in a laboratory with DNA based assays working with plants and/or seeds.
