Senior Plant Breeder, Spinach

Location: Mt. Vernon, Washington, USA

Sakata Seed America, Inc. is looking for a Senior Plant Breeder – Spinach for our Research Department.

  • Responsible for developing elite competitive material in accordance with defined objectives considering yield, appeal, disease resistance, and production capability.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating the Project Definition Report annually and being prepared to present the program in this format once a year.
  • Responsible for writing compliant G2 Nominations and working with the product managers to supply all necessary information needed for G3 Nomination and G4 Nomination advancement.
  • Prepares monthly research reports and writes trip reports sharing results of trials and visits with customers.
  • Responsible for coordinating and managing all breeder trials. He/She will schedule with Farm Manager for field and greenhouse space.
  • Coordinates and places trials in major market areas and travel to these areas for evaluation of entries.         
  • Coordinates breeder and foundation seed production with Farm Manager and/or Production department.
  • The Senior Plant Breeder will be a key member of the Crop Team.  Assists with the development of market and product profiles for assigned crop.  He/She will recommend hybrids for advancement.  Develops, evaluates and recommends new technologies to assist/improve breeding efforts.
  • Responsible for developing and reviewing relevant performance goals for Breeding Assistant. 
  • Manages the assistant breeder including employee training, safety and education programs.
  • Responsible for implementing approved Cooperative Agreements and providing reports, analysis and recommendations.
  • Provides Production department with required amount of disease free Breeder’s seed of parent lines of advancing hybrids along with Inbred (parent) Line Descriptions. Coordinates plant selection for production of quality stock seed.
  • Assists with the writing of a capital budget and assists with the preparation and monitoring of annual project expense budget.
  • Attends professional meetings to represent SAI, promote products, learn and collect information.
  • Other duties as assigned by Director of Research.

Qualifications:

  • Formal education requirement is a PhD degree in plant breeding/genetics. An M.Sc. degree will be considered given sufficient experience.

Experience and background

  • .A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in plant breeding required.

Others

  • Must maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License and a Commercial Applicator Pesticide license.
