Sr. Breeder, Lettuce
Location: San Juan Bautista, California, USA POSITION IN THE ORGANIZATION: Reports to the Crop Breeding Manager, Lettuce Romaine
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Manages the breeding program of a specific crop (group), at the local research station.
Summary of responsibilities:
- Drafting and, if necessary, adjusting a crop policy plan.
- Managing the department efficiently.
- Preparing, carrying out and assessing the breeding programs and/or projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Brief description of responsibilities and duties:
- Drafting and, if necessary, adjusting a crop policy plan.
- Drafting a crop policy plan, divided into breeding projects, in consultation with the Crop Breeding Manager as input for the strategic crop plan.
- Developing and implementing new ideas, developments and techniques on breeding in general, technology and biotechnology, in order to apply those ideas in the crop policy plan. Incorporating knowledge acquired through literature, symposia and conferences in the practical/technical execution of the breeding projects.
- Preparing breeding objectives, division of duties, budget and time path.
- Managing the department efficiently.
- Managing/assisting/motivating and assessing personnel: (Assistant) Breeders and Technicians.
- Preparing, carrying out and assessing breeding programs and/or projects.
- Preparing the breeding program, taking into account the variety, surroundings, type of soil, climatological conditions, growing process and so on, including details such as the amount of seeds to be sown, sowing time, pollination time and harvesting time and crossbreeding programs;
- Purification of parent lines, preservation of basic seed parent lines and providing the Production Department with uniform and stable parent line(s) material;
- Description of parent lines;
- Drafting disease-, resistance- and marker tests in consultation with the Phytopathology, RDT and Molecular Biology Departments;
- Observing, assessing and selecting material (breeding- and screening tests), taking into account the formulated breeding objectives;
- Reporting observations, findings and conclusions;
- Consulting with the Product Specialist on varieties from the first screening, qualifying for the second screening;
- Recording, processing and analyzing all data in electronic systems like BreEZys and Varmas. Reporting to CBM.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Profile:
Education / Knowledge
- PhD in Genetics / Plant Breeding with a minimum of 8 years work experience.
- Has a thorough knowledge of plant breeding, modern methods of breeding and Phytopathology, is well acquainted with various cultivation techniques and has sufficient market knowledge.
- Keeps this knowledge up to date.
Skills
- Professional, assertive and clear communication skills (verbal and written).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Is creative, works systematically and shows great perseverance.
