The primary responsibility of this role is to enhance and support the cotton molecular breeding activities by effectively managing the greenhouse facilities at Leland, MS, providing management and guidance for counter season operations supporting molecular breeding and planning and conducting field evaluations including data collection.
The incumbent will:
- Efficiently manage cotton molecular breeding projects and accurately maintain breeding database records and seed storage inventories.
- Develop and trouble-shoot strategies and research to gain efficiencies and reliability in seed production within greenhouse operations, and to communicate and advise others of findings and improvements.
- As needed, support cotton trait introgression activities, goals and team strategies related to trait handling, trait testing and resulting actions, seed quality and quantity, meeting time-lines and cost effectiveness.
- Ensure the smooth functioning of equipment and facilities to maximize operations, while being proactive in overcoming obstacles.
- Supervise, train, manage and lead both full-time and temporary staff, and facilitate team interaction.
- Ensure compliance and participation within Quality Management Systems and Bayer Environmental Safety and Health (ESH) programs, while setting high standards of professional conduct.
- Effectively monitor and communicate expenditures and future resource needs, as well as aid in the supervision of capital projects associated with the site.
- Interact with other BCS cotton breeding and research teams to further research efforts, and to enhance the spectrum and success of BCS cotton programs globally.
- Travel as needed, 10% domestically and internationally.
The selected candidate is required to possess the following:
- PhD in Plant / Molecular Breeding or related scientific field (i.e. Agronomy, Genetics, Horticulture, etc.), or M.S. in Plant Breeding or related field with 5+ years plant breeding/research experience.
- Use of molecular markers in plant breeding activities.
- People management skills that include hiring, coaching and facilitating disciplinary action;
- Mechanical abilities, ensuring equipment is functioning properly;
- Ability to provide input for plant operations budget;
- Organizational, analytical and time management skills;
- Communication skills utilizing verbal and personal computer;
- Critical and logical thinking ability to plan present and future needs;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint. Ability to learn new database and related computer systems;
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Plant / Molecular Breeding or related scientific field (i.e. Agronomy, Genetics, Horticulture, etc.);
- 5+ years’ previous experience in cotton breeding/research.
