We are currently looking for a Sr. Field Trial Associate at our Ames, Iowa location.
The Sr. Field Trial Associate is a member of the Development team within the BASF Plant Science organization. Under supervision of the Field Trial Manager, the selected applicant will conduct both USDA-regulated and non-regulated field trial programs. This program supports the testing needs of a high throughput multi-target trait pipeline, supporting primarily maize with the potential to include other crops. In close cooperation with other functional areas and experts the position will also manage the implementation of precision technologies into the overall field trial programs. The position steers and oversees the implementation of single plot geo information and multiple assessment methodologies with technologically advanced sensors into the daily work routine of the field trials group. A focus will also be on the coordination of data streams from the field trials data system into the system framework of BASF Plant Science and, over time, the BASF BioScience Research platform.
Responsibilities will include:
- Planning and implementation of new technologies into field trials group.
- Close cooperation with internal and external experts from sensor development and field testing groups .
- Liaison across functional areas in BASFs Bioscience Research for advanced field trial technology.
- Metadata integration into trial reporting in close cooperation with Field Trial Management and other involved functions.
- Operation and maintenance of planting equipment, chemical application, plot maintenance.
- Data and regulated tissue sample collection.
- Responsible for local execution of regulatory compliance measures including maintenance of isolation distances.
- Training for part-time staff, transgenic seed containment, and volunteer monitoring and management.
- Hiring and day-to-day supervision of temporary workers during peak seasonal workload (i.e., tissue sampling and harvest).
Qualifications
BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Required:
- PhD/MS Degree in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Crop Science, Genetics, Crop Protection, Biological Sciences, or Related Field -OR- BS Degree in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Crop Science, Genetics, Crop Protection, Biological Sciences, or Related Field with 3+ years experience -OR- AA Degree in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Crop Science, Genetics, Crop Protection, Biological Sciences, or Related Field with 7+ years experience. (Experience will be at a minimum participating in field research).
- Ability and willingness to work in adverse environmental conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, and sunshine.
- Demonstrated expertise with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, and email applications, or similar applications in a network environment.
- Demonstrated experience with field research equipment such as tractors, planters, sprayers, combines, handheld data collection devices, label printers/software, seed counters, moisture meters, shellers, and other instruments unique to the seed industry.
- Experience leading full time or temporary employees.
Desired:
- Demonstrated experience working with USDA-regulated organisms in a field testing environment.
- Current Class A CDL or ability and willingness to obtain one within 6 months of hire date.
- Experience with production of multiple crops.
- Experience with agricultural production processes.
- Restricted Use Pesticide Applicators license upon hire or acquired within 6 months of hire date.
- Strong interest or (preferred) experience in automation, field robotics, field imaging, geospatial information management.
