Main Purpose:

Nuseed Europe is seeking a motivated person to join our European Research Team in the capacity of Sunflower Station Leader/Breeder. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing and running a sunflower research program in Spain. Candidate will be the hands-on manager of all phases of a comprehensive breeding and trait introgression program aimed at germplasm development, introgression of new traits into elite inbreds, and commercialization of hybrids for European markets.

The main activities of this position include, but are not limited to, establishing a breeding station and leading the oilseed breeding program by managing processes, projects, operations, data collection and analysis/summarization.

Principal Tasks and Accountabilities:

• Work with leadership to identify a suitable location and establish a breeding station in the Seville region of Spain.
• Focal point for hiring staff in accordance with plan for the new station.
• Assist with budgeting process and managing station budget to stay within plan.
• Develop, evaluate and select breeding lines in segregating populations to develop elite parent lines.
• Develop a greenhouse screening program for orobanche, and manage an aggressive introgression program.
• Conduct sunflower screening and evaluation for key sunflower diseases.
• Collaborate with molecular lab in Woodland, CA in the development and application of molecular technologies.

Experience and Qualifications:

• M.S. or Ph.D. in Agronomy or related field, and five or more years experience in plant breeding.
• Demonstrated knowledge of plant breeding, pathology, statistics and agriculture.
• Knowledge Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint. Experience in database management is a plus
• Ability to work extended hours during the peak planting, field, and harvest seasons.
• Basic ability to balance and prioritize tasks.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral.
