Molecular Scientist
Location: Woodland, California, USA Purpose:
The scientist is responsible for trait discovery, development and advancement activities for Nuseed’s core crops (sunflower, sorghum, and canola). The scientist will report directly to the Molecular Biology Leader and will work closely with plant breeders, trait advancement managers, and technical support staff.
Job Responsibilities:
- Be able to design, manage and execute experiments independently and in a timely manner.
- Actively contribute towards discovery activities.
- Work with breeders to map traits of interest in core crop species.
- Develop, validate and employ high-throughput molecular assays to assist breeding through marker-assisted selection.
- Keep accurate records.
- Manage and mentor junior lab personnel to safely and efficiently conduct experiments and instrument troubleshooting.
- Develop and capture intellectual property (IP).
- Comply with company policies
Required Education & Experience:
- A PhD degree in genetics, plant genetics and breeding, plant biology or related fields. Knowledge in bioinformatics and programming would be a plus.
- A minimum of eight years of hands on experience in molecular marker development, QTL mapping and fine-mapping, gene cloning, and marker assisted breeding. Experience in next generation sequencing and high throughput genotyping would be a plus.
- Ability to design and execute experiments independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent leadership, multi-task project management, and communication (written and verbal) skills.
- Self-motivated with good working ethic and positive attitude.
- Team player – ability to work with and assist others to ensure the workloads are evenly shared and projects are completed in required timelines.
