BASF – the Chemical Company – consolidated its plant biotechnology activities in BASF Plant Science (GB) in 1998. Today, about 800 employees are working to optimize crops for more efficient agriculture, renewable raw materials and healthier nutrition. We are currently looking for a Team Leader Senior Scientist, Protein Biochemist to join its Regulatory Sciences laboratory. Specifically, the Team Leader Senior Scientist, Protein Biochemist will manage and provide the technical guidance to a team of protein biochemists responsible for the design and conduct of protein safety studies used to support the deregulation or approval of transgenic plants.
The purpose of these studies is to (i) characterize the expressed novel proteins, (ii) quantify the protein expression levels in various plant tissues, (iii) characterize the protein test substances used in a variety of ecotox and toxicological studies, and (iv) determine the stability of the proteins in either plant tissues or food/feed matrices.
In addition, related activities to be managed by the Team Leader Senior Scientist, Protein Biochemist include (i) purifying the expressed novel proteins from transgenic plant tissues and (ii) preparing the protein test substances used in the ecotox and toxicological studies.
The successful candidate should also have experience in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, cloning and DNA sequencing since these skills are important to fulfill the job requirements. The Regulatory Science laboratory operates according to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and experience in GLP is considered an important competency for this position.
Additional responsibilities of the position include:
- Managing a team of Study Directors for GLP studies, reviewing GLP Study Protocols and Final Reports, and interfacing with Study Sponsors to assure the protein safety studies meet the regulatory requirements.
- Serving as the GB representative on industry groups related to protein safety.
- Maintaining expertise in the current industry-standards for the scientific interpretation of the global regulatory requirements.
- Leading and providing technical guidance to members of the Regulatory Science group, as well as the larger GB community on the design and conduct of regulatory protein safety studies.
- Managing and providing technical oversight for any external contractor used by the Regulatory Sciences group to facilitate the conduct of the protein safety studies.
Furthermore, the individual must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with others in a team environment. He/she must have well developed leadership and project management skills and be a creative, motivated team player. The incumbent will be required to simultaneously focus on multiple issues, and must have the ability to meet multiple goals and to attain the desired results, often under time pressure and in a fast changing environment. In addition, travel to contract testing facilities will be required as well as participation, as the GB representative, on appropriate inter-industry panels.

REQUIREMENTS:
- BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Required:
- PhD degree in Protein Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology, or Related Field with a focus on protein biochemistry, with 10 years of research experience - OR - MS with 15 years research experience - OR - BS with 20 years research experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading projects and teams.
- Able and willing to travel domestically and internationally at least 15% of the time.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of bioinformatics.
