BASF – the Chemical Company – consolidated its plant biotechnology activities in BASF Plant Science (GB) in 1998. Today, about 800 employees are working to optimize crops for more efficient agriculture, renewable raw materials and healthier nutrition. We are currently seeking a Senior Field Analytics Manager.
The Senior Field Analytics Manager will be a member of the BASF Plant Science (GB) Development Analytics team.
A major function of the team is to perform seasonal targeted wet chemistry and spectroscopic analysis of field trial samples in high-volume analytical work to support trait project decisions.
Additional smaller customized experiments are executed outside of the pipeline analysis activity to meet specific objectives.
Work occurs within a highly-interactive global network of people and laboratories.
The successful candidate will:
- Manage three direct reports and indirectly manage seasonal contract labor executing laboratory work.
- Lead communication amongst a broad set of operational and project stakeholder groups to secure resources for, plan, and execute laboratory work.
- Manage seasonal high-throughput laboratory analysis in collaboration with lab staff, regional field crews and the international GB Research community.
- Manage smaller custom cross-laboratory experiments to meet specific objectives.
- Ensure that analytical goals are met and timelines are maintained.
- Impact the direction of projects and the Ames site as a principal contributor to cross-functional project and operational teams.
- An integral member of the site leadership team.
- Participate in ad-hoc teams and committees to represent the lab and the function into which the position reports.
- Lead workpackage teams.
- Manage basic laboratory functions:
- Negotiate external relationships with support from procurement and contract compliance groups.
- Assess intellectual property and broaden the GB patent portfolio with legal support.
- Improve the laboratory IT systems by gathering requirements and communicating them to application owners to implement.
- Direct crafting of protocols and SOPs and manage their annual reviews.
- Ensure the laboratory adheres to EHS, Quality Management and Regulatory Compliance rules.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Required:
- PhD with 5 years, MS with 8 years or BS with 15 years of experience using preparative and analytical instrumentation.
- Minimum of 5 years experience with wet chemical analysis of plant tissue and/or seed samples.
- Excellent communication of technical and operational activities verbally and in writing, with an ability to influence from a distance.
- Proven ability to identify and "troubleshoot" technical problems by application of scientific principles and established analytical techniques in the field to meet strict reporting deadlines.
- Understanding of and use of the basic principles of database systems for collecting, viewing, manipulating and reporting analytical data.
- Demonstrated experience in management of a laboratory operation including: line management of a staff, procuring equipment/consumables, and managing a budget.
- Travel 15% of the time.
PREFERRED:
- Experience with liquid chromatography (LC)
- Experience with client-server data acquisition systems is a plus.
- Commercial or industrial laboratory experience using high-throughput automated analytical instrumentation.
- Experience in a GLP environment.
