The Applied Genetics Manager is a member of the Development team within the BASF Plant Science organization.
The Manager has primary operational responsibility for reliable and timely supply of seed production and field experiments. The incumbent will manage all aspects of safety and USDA regulatory compliance, public relationships; manage operational expenses and capital costs within company targets. This position will supervise fulltime and contract employees.
The position is based in Kekaha, Hawaii
Responsibilities will include:
- Management of Applied Genetics group (4 employees) in Kekaha, HI, conducting both USDA-regulated and non-regulated seed production and field trial experiments. (This program supports the field testing needs of a high throughput multi-target trait pipeline for corn, rice, soybean, sunflower, and Canola trait project teams.)
- Coordinate with Applied Genetics Manager and Development Managers to develop production schedules and capacity data.
- Responsible for local execution of BASF internal and USDA Regulatory Compliance policy.
- Comprehensively review quantity, quality and timeliness data and address areas for improvement, simplification, optimization or expansion for the betterment of our business.
- Will have some responsibility to address public perceptions of Biotechnology. Act as the technical interface with all internal clients and the public.
- Work with the Agronomy Group and the Applied Genetics Manager to ensure that sound agronomic and cultural practices are followed.
- Responsible to follow Stewardship and Responsible Care programs that protect BASF finances, image, employee and environmental safety and product integrity. Lead full and part-time employee adoption of these standards.
- Prepare and retain training documents, job safety analyses, and other documents related to site safety activities as required by Stewardship and Responsible Care programs.
Qualifications:
BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Required:
- PhD in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Crop Science, Genetics, Crop Protection, Biological Sciences or Related Field with 2 years direct experience, MS with 5 years direct experience, or BS with 8 years direct experience.
- Demonstrated experience working with USDA-regulated organisms in a field testing environment.
- Ability and willingness to work in adverse environmental conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, and sunshine.
- Demonstrated expertise with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, and Lotus Notes or similar applications in a network environment.
- Demonstrated experience with field research equipment such as tractors, planters, sprayers, combines, handheld data collection devices, label printers/software, seed counters, moisture meters, shellers, and other instruments unique to the seed industry.
Desired:
- Familiarity with pedigree management and seed storage inventory systems.
- Good working knowledge of statistics and experimental design.
- Significant people and project management experience in an agricultural related research position.
- Ability to resolve work priorities against resource constraints.
- Ability to think and plan strategically.
- Ability to communicate clearly at all organizational levels.
