BASF - the Chemical Company - consolidated its plant biotechnology activities in BASF Plant Science in 1998. Today, about 700 employees are working to optimize crops for more efficient agriculture, renewable raw materials and healthier nutrition. We are currently looking for an Applied Genetics Associate.
The Applied Genetics Associate is a member of the Development team within the BASF Plant Science organization. The Applied Genetics Associate has primary operational responsibility for managing a seed inventory and an associated database utilized by the Herbicide Tolerant Crop group (HTC) within Development. The Applied Genetics Associate will be responsible for maintaining the viability of seed lots used for propagation, entering and updating all data associated with each seed lot including the maintenance of genetic pedigrees and tracking the placement and final disposition of seed lots. Maintaining proper procedures and enacting process changes to ensure seed viability, traceability, and providing evidence for chain of custody are critical responsibilities for this position. The Associate must remain compliant with Stewardship and Legal guidelines for the storage, use, and archive of seed materials, with particular attention paid to the proper separation of materials under established guidelines.
This position will be based in Research Triangle Park, NC.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintaining seed inventory, associating seed lots with data on seed volumes, quality, presence/absence of genes of interest, zygosity, and pedigree.
- Maintaining the physical inventory in a manner compliant with all Stewardship requirements regarding material separation.
- Tracking seed movements and transfers into and out of inventory to support chain of custody requirements.
- Follow standard seed management practices necessary to maintain seed viability and ensure the seed storage container is operating under optimal conditions.
- Identify and implement process improvements when necessary, aligned with BPS Stewardship principles
- Process approved seed order requests from customers through database within specified timelines.
- Informing the Development Management and Applied Genetic groups about the quality, quantity and availability of seed lot candidates to be evaluated in field trials or greenhouse experiments.
- Paying particular attention to seed received from external sources and partners to assure that origination documentation, pedigree, and contained traits are clearly captured by the database.
- Identifying critical seed lots (e.g. patent deposits, donor lines, reference standards) for increase and develop a schedule to ensure seed volume and viability are optimal. Independently determine active project seed lots that require viability testing and seed volume increases and report/coordinate implementation with Applied Genetics Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
REQUIRED:
- MS degree in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Seed Technology, Microbiology or related scientific discipline or Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years direct experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Plant Breeding and Genetics.
- De -Demonstrated ability to understand, read and write pedigrees for breeding materials.
- Experience with the interpretation of molecular diagnostic results to determine the presence/absence of genes of interest, adventitious presence and zygosity.
- Experience with pedigree management and seed storage inventory systems.
- Self-motivated, flexible and organized work practice, with high attention to detail.
DESIRED:
- Database development or maintenance.
- Familiarity and/or experience working within regulated material and associated USDA-Aphis requirements.
- Experience working under Quality Management Systems.
- Experience writing or collaborating on SOP development and Work Instructions.
- Experience testing seed viability under AOSA Rules, primarily Brassica sp,. Helianthus annuus, Triticum sp., Glycine max and Oryza sativa.
