Greenhouse Technician

The principle role of this position will assist with greenhouse and field activities of the cotton breeding program. Position will be located in the Leland, MS area.
The incumbent will:
- Supports cotton discovery breeding activities: planting, testing, pollinating, harvesting, seed processing, data management in both the field and the greenhouse. The primary responsibilities will be to oversee the management of the field trials;
- Assists greenhouse manager with planting, tissue sampling, transplanting, pesticide applications, and harvesting in the greenhouse;
- Troubleshoots and conducts maintenance and general repairs of greenhouse facilities and site: irrigation and lighting systems management, aids in the coordination and scheduling of service providers, etc;
- Supports acquisition of greenhouse stores, maintains and organizes head house facilities. Plans for future needs;
- Supervises and trains temporary employees;
- Assists with the monitoring and adjustment of greenhouse computer control system;
- Develops or revises protocols regarding equipment use, maintenance or safety;
- Must have or be able to obtain a pesticide applicator permit within 3 months of hire. Will be responsible for working with greenhouse manager to implement a pesticide application regimen;
- Participates and complies with all Environmental Safety and Health programs;
- Ensures compliance with all regulatory practices;
- Interacts with other BCS research teams to further research efforts, and to enhance the spectrum and success of BCS cotton programs.
The selected candidate is required to possess the following:
- B.S. in Agronomy or related fields (i.e. Plant Breeding, Horticulture, Biology, etc.), or ability to complete the degree within 1 year of hire;
- Knowledge of Microsoft office, including EXCEL and Word;
- Any greenhouse, field research or seed production experience. Preference will be given to those with cotton experience;
- Background or experience in insect pest management;
- Ability to work with a diversity of greenhouse and research personnel.
