Data Management Specialist - Plant Science

BASF - the Chemical Company - consolidated its plant biotechnology activities in BASF Plant Science in 1998. Today, about 800 employees are working to optimize crops for more efficient agriculture, renewable raw materials and healthier nutrition.
We are currently in search of a Data Management Specialist.
As a part of the Global IT staff of BASF Plant Science in North America, the Data Management Administrator for North America will be responsible for supporting applications for field research operations and other IT functions for the North American sites along with other BASF Plant Science sites. The position will involve collaboration with other BASF colleagues as well as those outside the company.
Tasks related to this position will involve, but are not limited to:
- Administering and managing various breeding software projects (such as PRISM) for the North American user community
- Supporting data exchange between breeding software and several databases used by field operations and research
- Helping to create and maintain application documentation (i.e. user manuals, training documents)
- Providing training for development group, contractors and other functions as necessary
- Coordinating and testing enhancements of software packages which will involve colleagues from various groups including IT
This position will be based in either Sycamore, IL or Ames, IA, and will require travel to BASF Plant Science locations within and outside of The United States Midwest region.
QUALIFICATIONS:
BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
REQUIRED:
- Masters degree in Plant Science, Agronomy, Computer Science or closely related field with 7 years of experience in supporting software for field research OR Bachelor degree in Plant Science, Agronomy, Computer Science or closely related field with 10 years of experience in supporting software for field research
- Demonstrated knowledge of Agronomy and Plant Breeding practices
- Demonstrated knowledge of systems analysis and database concepts
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office tools
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong computer skills relating to administration and support of software
- Ability and willingness to handle confidential information and data
- Ability to multi-task while maintain a high degree of detailed attentiveness
- Ability to plan, prioritize and organize work to meet the day-to-day, short term and long term requirements
PREFERRED:
- Previous Experience with PRISM
- At least 5 years’ experience in a plant biotechnology field research setting
- Previous experience in developing and writing application user manuals, preparing user training documents and presenting user training
- Demonstrated ability to understand the basic field and research concepts in plant biotechnology, to enable effective requirements gathering and user support activities
