Senior Development Manager

We are currently seeking a Development Manager (Clearfield® crops) to join the Development Management team within the BASF Plant Science organization. This team performs critical activities necessary to advance plant breeding and biotechnology projects from idea to marketplace as fast and effectively as possible.
The Development Manager will serve as a core team member on Clearfield® crop teams assessing opportunities for enhanced herbicide tolerance in sunflower, canola, and other crops. The Development Manager will be responsible for designing field trials to determine crop tolerance to support proof of concept assessments and for supporting regulatory trials. Further, the Development Manager will direct a trait introgression program for the introduction of herbicide tolerance traits into both trait donor and commercial germplasm.
Development Manager will lead a team of BASF Plant Science Employees dedicated to supporting Clearfield® trait development.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Design and direction of a greenhouse and field-based introgression program
- Design and execution of field trials to assess herbicide tolerance and agronomic effects of herbicide treatment
- Seed increase of experimental materials
- Participation in team negotiations to obtain germplasm for trait donor line development
- Pedigree and seed inventory management
- Extensive interactions with Research to develop testing methods and establish trait proof of concept
- Strong interface with BASF's Agricultural Products Crop Development Manager for technical support of commercial breeding partners
- Implementation of a strong Stewardship program within the program area
- Personnel management
Required:
- Ph.D. in genetics, breeding, agronomy or related discipline with 12 years of post-graduate experience as a practicing breeder, agronomist, or geneticist involved in crop and trait development - or - Master's or Bachelor’s degree in genetics, breeding, agronomy or related discipline with 15 years of post-graduate experience as a practicing breeder, agronomist, or geneticist involved in crop and trait development. BASF recognizes Institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.
- Must be able to speak and write in English.
- Must have strong presentation skills.
- Demonstrated experience working within a strong team oriented environment.
- Experience managing and/or mentoring a project or team.
- Proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally 15% of the time during the summer months.
Preferred:
- Experience with trait development in canola, sunflower, rice or soybeans.
- Evidence of successful development interaction and work plan development with third parties.
- Demonstrated experience in the design and execution of breeding nurseries, field trials and herbicide tolerance assessments.
- Demonstrated experience developing and administering an operational budget.
- Demonstrated experience managing a team of 2 or more direct reports and/or temporary employees.
- Experience with regulated trials.
