General Manager

Location: Madison, Wisconsin, USA

Organization Description:

The Wisconsin Crop Improvement Association (WCIA), a nonprofit private corporation, is the official Seed and Forage/Mulch Certifying Agency for Wisconsin. It provides third-party certification, field inspection and audit services throughout Wisconsin in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies. In addition, WCIA is involved in licensing plant varieties/genetics developed by University of Wisconsin-Madison plant breeders. WCIA operates a complete seed analysis and genetic (ELISA)/herbicide trait testing laboratory. WCIA is located in and cooperates with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Agronomy Department, 1575 Linden Dr., Madison, WI.

Position Responsibilities:

Responsible for the Wisconsin Seed Certification program, other third party inspection and audit programs, the licensing of plant varieties/genetics, other product development projects, personnel relations, maintaining professional memberships and qualifications, association financial activities, public relations, meetings, advertising, facilities, equipment, software, records and inventory.
Responsible, in conjunction with the Board of Directors, to hire full time employees with the additional responsibility to directly hire part time employees.
Personnel reporting to this position are the seed laboratory manager, bookkeeper and field inspectors.

This position reports directly to the WCIA Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS degree in an agricultural or related field
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and in group settings
  • Ability to foster collaboration/cooperation

Preferred Qualifications:

Seed industry knowledge/experience in: Certification, testing, production or regulatory.

Salary: Commensurate with training and experience
