We are currently recruiting for a Barley Development Scientist for our location in Burley, Idaho.
The Barley Development Scientist provides scientific analytical expertise and leads applied technical investigative projects to support the goals of the MillerCoors agronomy, breeding, and malting teams to provide MillerCoors with barley varieties with superior agronomics and malting/brewing performance. The position provides significant hands-on support and leadership in the activities associated with the planning, planting, growing, harvesting and data evaluation of barley field trials.
- Barley Lab: Manages and performs analytical analyses. Identifies, evaluates and implements new analytical methodology to advance the barley breeding process.
- Malt Lab: Provides technical hands-on support for micro-malting/malt lab as required.
- Provides hands-on support of barley breeding program as defined as planning, packaging seed, planting, chemical applications, harvest, and post-harvest activities of on- and off-farm field trials
- Lead on providing recommendations for approval of field chemical applications to assist in ensuring practices are in compliance with government regulations.
- Lead on implementation of software and database management for improved barley/malt lab efficiencies and accuracy.
- Manages barley germplasm collection.
- Coordinate activities of seasonal technicians to support the barley breeding program in collaboration with Barley Breeder
Preferred qualifications
- BS degree with MS degree preferred in cereal breeding or related field plus hands-on experience (3-5 years) in cereal or plant breeding programs.
- Knowledge of principles of soil science, crop science, irrigation, agronomy, plant pathology and other agricultural skills.
- Working knowledge of experimental design and applied statistics.
- Comprehensive knowledge of malting and brewing science desirable.
- Proficiency in computer software applications and database management.
- Chemical Handlers License.
- Ability to lift 40 lbs.
- Willing to travel to off-site field trials
