Agronomist

Location: West Tennessee & North Alabama region or North Carolina/Virginia region

Bayer CropScience is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Agronomic Services Team in the North Carolina , Virginia region, or West Tennessee and North Alabama region. In this role, you will be responsible to maximize sales of Bayer CropScience cotton and soybean varieties and traits by contributing to the development of commercial strategies, providing product positioning tools for Sales, and implementing technical support programs in the North Carolina and Virginia region. Agronomists serve as the technical specialists of the product portfolio of seed and traits and perform a significant role in the variety advancement process.

 

The Agronomic Services Team is committed to deliver innovative solutions and crop recommendations for cotton, rice, and soybean producers as Bayer CropScience brings forward high-yielding varieties and hybrids; each selected and optimized for specific geographical regions to meet the needs of growers within that region. The Agronomic Services Team develops relationships with key cooperators and stakeholders and serves as the liaison for technical information exchange both externally and internally.

 

The incumbent will:

  • Maximize sales of Bayer CropScience cottonseed products and soybean varieties by implementing technical support programs to enhance Product Development, Marketing and Sales within approved company policies, procedures and budgets in a specified geographic territory;
  • Work closely with commercial operations, marketing, supply chain, field production, breeding, trait development, technical services, and sales to profitably manage a robust product portfolio of seed and traits;
  • Work closely with Seed Leads and Sales Rep’s to anticipate and respond to local and regional needs for technical materials;
  • Design and coordinate product demonstration trials, small-plot replicated trials, Cotton Agronomic Performance trials (CAP), and crop tours in innovative ways; coordinate soybean demonstration trials, provide leadership in technical information exchange, and deliver sales support materials to support growth of the soybean seed and trait business in territory;
  • Coordinate testing strategy for regional Variety Trials and oversee during growing season;
  • Assist in trait development trials in close coordination with Trait Development Manager;
  • Collect, summarize and present product performance information on cotton and soybean seed products for Sales to support forecasting, training, and development of sales tools and materials; provide support for relevant companion crop protection product use and performance;
  • Develop local product recommendations by testing new and existing Bayer CropScience varieties with universities, consultants, growers and internal technical service personnel;
  • Provide technical support to Sales for priority commercial/near commercial products by recommending optimal regional variety placement, developing best management practices, and communicating both to the market;
  • Provide recommendations and conduct proactive programs that improve Bayer CropScience relationships with local crop consultants and customers;
  • Coordinate effective technology exchange through training and presentations for sales and customers in region;
  • Present technical presentations on seed and trait technologies at local, state, district, and professional meetings;
  • Coordinate GIA (Grant in Aid) activities and establish effective demonstrations and tours;
  • Hire and supervise seasonal interns;
  • Evaluate product development processes to improve product portfolio efficiency;
  • Assist in supporting Safety, Stewardship and Regulatory policies/programs, while setting high standards of professional conduct;
  • Readily accessible as local and regional specialist on Bayer CropScience and competitive cottonseed products and soybean varieties and best management agronomic practices;
  • Travel in region daily, as needed, with potential for some overnight travel, as well as international travel, approx. 35%.
     

The selected candidate is required to possess the following:

  • Ph.D., M.S. or B.S. degree in a biological or agricultural science, or related scientific field; with Ph.D. degree, 0-2 years of relevant experience, M.S. degree, 2+ years of relevant experience; or B.S. degree, 4+ years of relevant experience;
  • Experience in an agricultural related field and/or demonstrated ability to co-ordinate and evaluate internal and external research;
  • Technical knowledge of crop management practices within the territory and product expertise across the region in cotton and soybean variety acceptance/performance to provide sales support and direction for future research;
  • Specialized knowledge of variety testing, statistical analysis and experimental design;
  • Field experience in cotton and soybean seed production;
  • General understanding and ability to operate and maintain agricultural production equipment;
  • Analytical and creative skills to identify and take advantage of new business opportunities within the region;
  • Communication and human relations skills necessary to perform the duties of the position, influence decision makers and project a positive Bayer technical image;
  • Ability to work independently as well as contribute to a dynamic team environment;
  • Ability to establish relationships with both internal and external partners;
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to be flexible and modify plans as required, minimizing impact on data and production as situations arise;
  • Organizational, team-oriented, and leadership abilities, and proficient communication, personnel supervision, data collection and management skills;
  • Ability to deliver technical presentations at internal and external professional meetings;
  • Proficient computer skills to analyze data, prepare promotional and training literature, and accomplish written communication tasks;
  • Ability to travel in region daily, as needed, with occasional overnight travel, as well as international travel as needed, approx. 35%,
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thesis-based M.S. or Ph.D. degree in a biological or agricultural related science.
