We are looking for a Canola Breeder to join our Agricultural Solutions team in Western Kansas. The candidate should be located in the Western area of the state of Kansas for this role.

Accountable to the North American Canola Breeding Manager, the purpose to this position is to support the strategy, development, and execution of the Central Great Plains breeding programs objectives required for hybrid development associated with portfolio needs to deliver improved products to feed into the InVigor Canola pipeline for that region.  These hybrids should expand the area of canola production, providing additional revenue and rotational options for growers and seed sales for the organization.

As a Canola Breeder, you create chemistry by...

  • Strategic and short-term planning for hybrid development, including developing and managing breeding project plans, and selection of parent lines and hybrids for advancement.
  • Collect in season evaluations and work with Seed Science Operations, Technologies, Pathology and Seed Chemistry teams to ensure that high quality data is collected for selection. 
  • Analyze data and create reports and present advancements internally within breeding and to other parts of the business when required.
  • Work closely with other Breeders, Molecular / Discovery breeders, Disease Resistant Breeders, Biometrics to implement advanced breeding technologies, including development of predictive breeding methods. 
  • Collaborate with SSO to manage third party trials in the Centra Great Plains regions and provide appropriate material for testing.
  • Work with Research, Trait Development and Regulatory to bring new traits to the market.
  • Participate in strategic planning for the Central Great Plains which will include resource planning, capital needs, and staffing within allocated budget allocations.

If you...

  • Ph.D. degree in Plant Breeding or other relevant agricultural science with 3 years of related experience in breeding programs OR Master's Degree in Plant Breeding or other relevant agricultural science with 6 years of related experience in breeding programs. 
  • Experience working in a plant breeding program and managing breeding projects.
  • Familiarity with experimental design, data collection and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with coding in R or similar software programs for the analysis of data in statistics, genetic mapping, diversity analysis, quantitative genetics, genome wide selection and visualizations outputs. 
  • Strong understanding of genomics tools and approaches such as genome sequence, QTL mapping, genome association studies, etc. 
  • Experience in Canola breeding or other Brassica crops would be an asset.
  • Expertise in modern plant breeding tools and familiarity with traditional plant breeding methods and crop production.
  • Mindset to challenge the status quo for the improvement of strategies, methods, and procedures in a high paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills 
  • Ability to travel around 25% locally (day travel) and 5-10% internationally
