Yield Testing Manager

Location: Kearney, Nebraska, USA

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

This position provides day-to-day supervision for a variety of maize research activities at the Kearney, Nebraska research station.
The position will play a key role in developing superior inbreds and hybrids primarily for 105-115 RM, by supporting all phases of experiment planning, data collection, data quality and analysis, seed filling, and field activities including planting, pollinating and harvest.
The position will be responsible for identification of high quality field sites for research plot testing and coordination of all Yield Testing operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for maintaining the highest level of confidentiality, customer service and professionalism; responsible for promoting a positive image of the company and the research department.
  • Manage all on-station and off-station farming operations associated with the Yield Testing program to insure all operations are administered in a timely manner to optimize research experiment results.
  • Manage the Sales Brand Demo grown at the Kearney, NE research station.
  • Manage data from field collection through central storage including data quality checking and classification.
  • Acquire and maintain facilities and equipment for effective and efficient functioning of all Yield Testing operations.
  • Troubleshoot equipment related problems. Responsible for vendor negotiations and coordinating on site equipment repairs.
  • Work with Corn Breeder to develop and manage an annual station budget that supports research goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for coaching of staff at the station to maximize performance, build a culture of safety, and develop their careers.
  • Supervise and plan out duties for full time and part-time positions at the Research Station to implement the Yield Testing plan of work in the most efficient and safe manner.
  • Collaborate with other research stations to exchange ideas, plots, data and other items to maximize performance of the team.
  • Conduct experiments according to specific procedures, exercising independent judgment and discretion, as appropriate.
  • Integrate multiple priorities and work activities to successfully meet departmental and seasonal deadlines.
  • Operate research equipment (planters, sprayers, combines, trucks, trailers).
  • Develop and establish proficiency with new technology and computer programs related to the overall breeding effort.
  • Support all other research activities at the research station as appropriate.
  • Frequent reporting to his/her supervisor about project status and needs in a timely manner.

Duties and responsibilities may be revised as needed by the Corn Breeder and /or the Director of Corn Research.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agronomy or related field and minimum of 5 to 8 years of industry related experience, or Master’s Degree and 2 to 4 years of experience.
  • In depth experience of project and personnel management;
  • Excellent planning and organization skills;
  • ability to plan and manage multiple projects completely and accurately;
  • attention to detail;
  • problem analysis and problem resolution skills;
  • strong interpersonal and communication skills required,
  • working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint preferred) and common PC-based software.
  • Agronomic expertise to include herbicide knowledge and application, tillage practices, crop scouting, problem identification and solving, as well as knowledge of experimental field plot design.
  • Experience with agricultural based machinery and equipment is required.
  • Knowledge and experience using research plot equipment is highly desirable.
  • Self-motivation and ability to initiate projects, improvements, decisions and problem solving are required.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills to effectively coordinate complex research station operations are required.
  • Person must have enthusiasm and aptitude for learning and continuous improvement of critical research activities.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work required hours;
  • ability to lift 50 lbs.;
  • ability to work in both field and station as required;
  • Additional hours and weekends during seasonal peak periods, including some overnight stays;
  • travel to provide support at other research stations and winter nursery locations;
  • ability to obtain and maintain a CDL license and meet AgReliant's Motor Vehicle Qualifications.
