Research & Development Specialist, Wheat Breeding

Location: Lincoln, Nebraska, USA

Job description
 
The primary responsibility of this role is to enhance and support the wheat breeding activities by effectively supporting all early generation wheat breeding activities, providing assistance for wheat breeding yield trials, and actively participating with all other aspects of the wheat breeding program, as needed.  Position will be located in the Lincoln, NE area.
 
The incumbent will:
 
  • Assist the wheat breeder and the wheat operations manager in the management of the plant breeding program.  Duties include managing the crossing, seed processing, planting preparation, note taking, and harvest preparation for early generation materials and head rows;
  • Assist with data collection, analysis and reporting.  Duties may include such activities as collecting data for plant phenotypic ratings, assist with data analysis and project updates;
  • Assist with yield trials.  Duties may include packaging seed, putting packets in planting order, planting, note taking, and statistical analysis;
  • Supervise full and part time staff as assigned.  Managing the hiring process for temporary employees and reporting hourly payroll;
  • Assist with other activities including marker assisted backcrossing, quality testing, cold room management, data base management and other projects as they develop;
  • Assist in supporting Safety, Stewardship and Regulatory policies/programs, while setting high standards of professional conduct;
  • Travel within area for off-station plots and meetings.  Travel to nurseries in the Great Plains region is required for data collection and assisting with harvest.  International travel will be required occasionally to work in the winter nursery.
Your qualifications

The selected candidate is required to possess the following:
 
  • B.S. degree in an agricultural technical discipline with 2 year's relevant experience or M.S. degree in an agricultural technical discipline; Preferred degree:  Plant Breeding and Genetics or Agronomy;
  • Field experience in operation, maintenance and function of agronomic research plot equipment;
  • Working knowledge of plant breeding, biotechnology and farm operations;
  • Regional knowledge of agronomic production systems and equipment;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to communicate with employees, management, and customers;
  • Ability to work with existing plant breeding team to plant, harvest and collect data in the wheat breeding program;
  • Excellent organizational and human relation skills, as well as attention to detail;
  • Proficient knowledge of personal computers and MicroSoft Office and Outlook software, as well as data base management;
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.   Overnight travel in local area, approximately 10%.
Preferred Qualifications
 
  • M.S. degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics or Agronomy;
  • Experience in wheat research;
  • Experience in agricultural research;
  • General knowledge of statistical theory and experimental design;
  • Experience in wheat breeding is a plus.
