Scientist / Wheat Breeder

Location: Lincoln, Nebraska, USA

Job description
 
The primary responsibility of this role is to support the wheat breeding activities by ensuring the development of wheat germplasm to meet goals and objectives in terms of product standards and costs, effectively manage early generation wheat breeding activities, and actively participating with all other aspects of the wheat breeding program.  Position will be located in the Lincoln, NE area.

The incumbent will:
  • Develop and execute the strategy for the successful, timely and cost-effective development of winter wheat germplasm for the Central Plains and surrounding region;
  • Effectively manage wheat breeding projects in terms of budgets and resource allocation;
  • Supervise Wheat Breeding staff in terms of budgets, and resource allocation in a manner that build a strong functional team, keeps projects on-time and on-cost, and facilitates overall implementation and realization of the Wheat seed business strategy;
  • Coordinate efforts with the Wheat Agronomist to provide robust yield data for advancement decisions;
  • Contribute to the establishment of the regional wheat breeding station, including activities such as marker assisted backcrossing, quality testing, cold room management, data base management and other projects as they develop;
  • Ensure compliance and participation of Safety, Stewardship and Regulatory policies, while setting high standards of professional conduct;
  • Effectively monitor and communicate expenditures and future resource needs, as well as aid in the supervision of capital projects associated with the site;
  • Interact with other BCS wheat breeding and research teams to further research efforts, and to enhance the spectrum and success of BCS wheat programs globally;
  • Travel as needed domestically and internationally, 25%.
Your qualifications

The selected candidate is required to possess the following:
  • Ph.D. degree in Plant / Molecular Breeding or related scientific fields (i.e. Agronomy, Genetics, Horticulture, etc.), or M.S. in Plant Breeding or related field with 4+ year’s professional experience;
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience in crop improvement and variety development;
  • Strong computer, analytical and creative skills are needed to analyze data, prepare management updates and crop site literature for visits of breeders, grower and others;
  • Working knowledge of molecular markers and wheat quality parameters;
  • Specialized knowledge of variety testing, statistical analysis and experimental design;
  • Experience in budget and personnel management;
  • People management skills that include hiring, coaching and facilitating disciplinary action;
  • Ability to provide input for plant operations budget;
  • Organizational and time management skills;
  • Excellent verbal and writing communication skills;
  • Critical and logical thinking ability to plan present and future needs;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint.  Ability to learn new database and related computer systems;
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
Preferred Qualifications
 
  • Ph.D. degree in Plant / Molecular Breeding Genetics or related scientific field (i.e. Agronomy, Genetics, Horticulture, etc.);
  • 5+ year’s previous experience in wheat breeding/research.
