Scientist / Agronomist, Wheat Breeding

The primary responsibility of this role is to support the wheat breeding activities by effectively managing yield trial activities, providing assistance for early generation wheat breeding activities and actively participating with all other aspects of the wheat breeding program. Position will be located in the Lincoln, NE area.
The incumbent will:
- Efficiently manage the wheat breeding yield trials utilizing state of the art processes;
- Evaluate and purchase equipment to support the regional station as well as making recommendations for new technology;
- Ensure the smooth functioning of equipment and facilities to maximize operations, while being proactive in overcoming obstacles at crucial times in the season;
- Responsible for the technical aspects of the wheat breeding yield trials and data collection;
- Supervise, train, manage and lead both full-time and temporary staff, and facilitate team interaction;
- Contribute to the establishment of the regional wheat breeding station, including activities such as marker assisted backcrossing, quality testing, cold room management, data base management and other projects as they develop;
- Ensure compliance and participation of Safety, Stewardship and Regulatory policies/programs, while setting high standards of professional conduct;
- Effectively monitor and communicate expenditures and future resource needs, as well as aid in the supervision of capital projects associated with the site;
- Interact with other BCS wheat breeding and research teams to further research efforts, and to enhance the spectrum and success of BCS wheat programs globally;
- Travel as needed, 20%, domestically and internationally.
Your qualifications
The selected candidate is required to possess the following:
- M.S. or Ph.D. degree in an agricultural discipline (such as agronomy, plant breeding, agriculture, botany or plant sciences);
- 2+ years of experience in wheat breeding program, wheat production, or wheat plot trials;
- Working knowledge of variety testing, statistical analysis and experimental design;
- Working knowledge and experience in farm/research equipment;
- Computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Office applications. Ability to learn new database and related computer systems;
- Strong people management skills that include hiring, coaching and facilitating disciplinary action;
- Ability to provide input for plant operations budget;
- Organizational, analytical and time management skills;
- Communication skills utilizing verbal and personal computer;
- Critical and logical thinking ability to plan present and future needs;
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in Plant / Molecular Breeding or related scientific field (i.e. Agronomy, Genetics, Horticulture, etc.);
- 3+ year’s previous experience in wheat breeding/research and/or seed production.
